Metro 2033 Fans Are Losing Their Minds Over This Cancelled Exodus Sequel

After the critically acclaimed release of Metro Exodus, fans have been patiently waiting for any updates on the next mainline entry in the franchise for over 7 years. While we’re finally getting our first glimpse of Metro Exodus’ sequel this week, ahead of PlayStation’s rumored State of Play, a recent leak suggests we could havebeen playing a completely different version of the game years ago.

Originally leaked on Discord, TheGameVerse on X gathered several details about the canceled fourth Metro project that have been circulating on Reddit, which fans have been praising for being much closer to the style of the original Metro games rather than the “Fallout-esque Exodus we got.“

We Were So Close To Getting Our Hands On Metro 4

Although Metro Exodus has technically already got a sequel in the form of the brutal Metro Awakening VR game, the latest leak proposes that the next game will be a prequel set either before or after the events of Metro: Last Light, where you play as Hunter from the original Metro 2033 rather than Artyom.

Despite returning to the underground subway systems of Moscow, the canceled Metro game supposedly boasted a fully open world with deep crafting and upgrade systems similar to what we saw in Metro Exodus, which even had a 120GB playable build all the way back in 2022. In addition to playing as the Spartan Hunter, Metro 4 would also havefocused on Khan and Bourbon as primary characters, confirming the latter’s rumored survival after Metro 2033.

While some fans pointed out that it would feel strange to carry on the series without Artyom, others were more than happy as they’ve “always wanted a Metro game with hunter“, especially when it raises the prospect of seeing “Artyrom return to Metro because of Hunter.”

There’s Still A Chance These Features Could Return

Carrying on the theme of player choice within the Metro games, one of the more distinctive mechanics was the ability to debunk or encourage rumors across the superstitious stations. With some of the examples given being using alcohol to suppress radiation poisoning and women shooting quicker than males when wearing NBC suits, the concept has some great gameplay potential if a similar version makes it into the next release.

Given how far into development some aspects of the canceled Metro 4 appear to be, it wouldn’t be too surprising to see them get recycled into the next release, which fans are already at their limit waiting for when it comes to the franchise that fans have described as some of their favorite entries in both the “post-apocalyptic” and “story-based shooters” alike.

While I’m right on board with fans that can’t wait any longer over how much they “need Metro 4 so bad,” hopefully, the latest reveal by 4A will have something to tie us over until the release of the long-awaited sequel to Metro Exodus.
