MoreThan Films Sells ‘Balearic’ to Cineverse for North America

MoreThan Films has sold North American digital rights to Ion de Sosa’s “Balearic” to Cineverse, which will release the film on its curated arthouse streaming platform Fandor, marking a key deal for one of the company’s Cannes Marché du Film titles.

The Barcelona-Berlin-São Paulo sales agency has also closed all-rights deals on Sophy Romvari’s “Blue Heron” with King Records for Japan and BKS Cinema for Finland, extending the film’s international rollout as it continues its U.S. theatrical release through Janus Films.

The deals put fresh momentum behind two 2025 Locarno Cineasti del Presente titles handled by MoreThan Films: De Sosa’s Spanish-French “Balearic” and Romvari’s debut feature “Blue Heron.”

“We couldn’t think of a better place than Fandor for ‘Balearic’s’ North American digital release,” said Queralt Pons Serra, managing partner at MoreThan Films.

“We believe that the film fits perfectly into their curatorial line-up that the programming team selects with great care. We are excited for U.S. and Canadian audiences to discover Ion de Sosa’s unique work.”

Eric Rowe, head of programming at Cineverse, described “Balearic” as “a daring, genre-defying film that feels both wholly original and uncannily timely.”

“Beneath its hypnotic surface, De Sosa taps into the unease and contradictions of the present moment in ways we believe will deeply resonate with Fandor audiences and anyone drawn to bold, original cinema,” Rowe added.

Produced by Spain’s Umbracle Cine, Jaibo Films and Apellaniz & de Sosa with France’s La Fabrica Nocturna Cinéma, “Balearic” follows a group of young people trapped in the swimming pool of a luxury house by three ferocious dogs. Nearby, neighbors gather at a villa to celebrate the beginning of summer. The night is St. John’s Eve, a time traditionally associated with magic.

MoreThan Films is presenting “Balearic” at Cannes as one of its priority Spanish titles, describing it as “a political and aesthetic statement” with an unsettling perspective, sharp humour and a hard-to-categorize sensibility.

The film is written by De Sosa, Chema García Ibarra, Juan González, Julián Génisson and Lorena Iglesias and its cast includes Luka Péros, Christina Rosenvinge and María Llopis. The project received support from ICAA, ECAM Forum and EWIP Cologne.

“Blue Heron” is already in theatrical release in North America, with Janus Films expanding the film into more than 90 U.S. theaters in its third week, according to MoreThan Films. Its Canadian release began May 1, ahead of forthcoming launches in Japan and Finland.

“We’re very excited to announce distribution partners for the film in such diverse territories as Finland and Japan,” said Lidia Damatto, managing partner at MoreThan Films, adding that the film is “in the right hands” with BKS Cinema and King Records, respectively.

Daniel Sundvik, CEO of BKS Cinema, called “Blue Heron” “a film full of both tactile sensitivity and bold, risk-taking creativity.”

“We believe that Sophy Romvari has the makings of a modern master, and it is a huge honour to bring her debut feature to Finnish audiences,” Sundvik said.

Romvari’s feature follows eight-year-old Sasha and her Hungarian immigrant family after they relocate to Vancouver Island in the late 1990s, where their new start is disrupted by the increasingly dangerous behavior of Sasha’s eldest brother, Jeremy.

During Cannes, MoreThan Films is also highlighting Gabriel Azorín’s “Last Night I Conquered the City of Thebes” (“Anoche conquisté Tebas”), a Spain-Portugal production from DVEIN Films, Filmika Galaika and Bando à Parte.

Written by Azorín and Celso Giménez, the film follows António and Jota as they visit resurfaced Roman thermal baths in Galicia, where the waters stir confessions around fear, intimacy and male friendship.
