Mr. Inbetween Is Disney+’s Biggest Hidden Gem Crime Drama

[

Disney+‘s most underrated crime drama show is also a surprising short series, meaning anyone who wants to experience a gripping and unusual story can watch it in its entirety in a relatively short span of time. While some of the core appeal of Disney+ has long been its roster of Marvel superhero movies and shows and animated releases, the platform also has a strong roster of more adult-orientated shows, including a range of crime dramas.

Between Disney+’s collection of stellar shows revolving around murder mysteries, and series like Sons of Anarchy that delve into the world of crime on a different level, there’s no shortage of darker series for viewers to enjoy on the streaming service. However, because there is a fair range of these kinds of releases on Disney+, it’s also easy to miss some of the strongest offerings on the service, simply because of the amount of choice.

Despite having a 95% critic score and 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, one strong crime drama has still remained relatively under wraps on Disney+ as a result of its extensive catalog, and because it released some years beforehand outside of Disney+ first. That said, it’s still a definite must-watch for fans of the genre, and because it’s a relatively short series that can be enjoyed between longer on-screen expeditions.

Mr. Inbetween Is A Painfully Underrated Crime Drama

Mr. Inbetween balances its dual intents as a stellar crime drama show and a comedy at the same time decidedly well, creating a series that is able to provide heartfelt moments alongside lighter fare. Indeed, any other approach likely would have limited the impact of the series’ story, which hinges upon a hitman named Ray balancing his work alongside his responsibilities to his loved ones, such as his daughter and brother.

The tonal whiplash between Ray brutally murdering people in cold blood and then going about getting icecream with his child daughter or convincing her that unicorns exist is an intentional one, and an approach that works well to explore the “inbetween” nature of Ray’s life that the title references, since the character exists in two very different worlds at the same time.

Naturally, this leads to some emotional moments from Ray where he is forced to confront the nature of his work and the split between his hardened persona and the emotions he feels for those in his life, but also lands strikingly well on a comedic front too, particularly because the character works so well as a hardened criminal with a domestic double life.

Mr. Inbetween’s Runtime Makes It A Perfect Weekend Watch

While Mr. Inbetween covers a lot of different storylines throughout its run, it’s by no means the longest crime drama show of all time, with a runtime that is far, far shorter than the likes of The Sopranos or Breaking Bad. Altogether, Mr. Inbetween‘s entire three-season-long run comes to around 9 hours and 58 minutes, which means it’s by no means a tiny series, but also not a decidedly long one.

As such, it’d be decidedly possible to watch all of the series in one weekend, particularly if someone were to begin watching Mr. Inbetween on a Friday night, since that’d mean only watching around 3 hours and 20 minutes of the show a day – and the first season is only around 3 hours itself, so is easiest to marathon through in a single go.

Given Mr. Inbetween is such a hidden gem that many have no idea it is even on Disney+, it’s all the more interesting to note that it’s a series that anyone can catch up on in its entirety in a relatively short time window – meaning it’s all the more worth watching, since it’s not a hundred-hour investment to experience all of the show, and there is also the original movie The Magician that the series spawned from for those who want to watch even more.
