Narcos Meets The Wire In Ridley Scott’s 8-Part Crime Series

[

One Apple TV show from legendary executive producer Ridley Scott blends The Wire with Narcos to create a riveting drug drama. There is no shortage of crime shows on streaming services, and no end to the genre’s many permutations. Prime Video’s Bosch Franchise reinvented the police procedural for the 21st century, taking a troubled protagonist worthy of True Detective or Mare of Easttown and dropping them into a procedural format borrowed from CSI or Law & Order.

Meanwhile, Netflix’s hit murder mystery shows run the gamut from lighter fare that is suitable for teenage viewers, like A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder and Riverdale, to grim, brutal psychological thrillers like His & Hers or Mindhunter. Within this context, it takes a lot for a crime drama to stand out, something that both The Wire and Narcos managed. Often listed as one of the best TV shows ever made, The Wire explored the drug trade in Baltimore from a diverse array of perspectives.

A poignant, intelligent dissection of criminal life in America, The Wire looked at how the media, the city’s government, its police force, and drug dealers intersected in a sprawling, complex network of rich, believable characters. Netflix’s Narcos was more focused, centering on the rise of Pablo Escobar’s Medellín Cartel and the DEA agents who tried to bring him down. Any show ambitious enough to try and blend both these premises should be commended, but that’s exactly what Apple TV’s enthralling Dope Thief managed in 2025.

How Dope Thief Ranks Against TV’s Most Iconic Crime Shows

Based on the novel of the same name by author Dennis Tafoya, Dope Thief focuses on a pair of drug dealers who regularly rob other drug dealers by posing as DEA agents. While this approach works for a while, the pair land themselves in hot water when they accidentally rob dealers who are being surveyed by the real DEA, thus alerting the institution to their existence. Brian Tyre Henry’s Ray and Wagner Moura’s Manny are soon dragged far further into the criminal underworld than they expected as their lies catch up with them.

Like The Wire, Dope Thief’s cast of characters exists on both sides of the law, from the surprisingly sympathetic Ray and Manny to Marin Ireland’s undercover DEA agent Mina and Dustin Nguyen’s drug dealer Son Pham. The show’s cleverly constructed narrative ensures that viewers get to see everyone involved as a real, fleshed-out person, rather than as straightforward caricatures of heroic cops and villainous drug dealers.

Dope Thief also has moments of levity and charming character comedy that ensure the show isn’t unbearably bleak, and these darkly comic interludes mean the show never takes itself too seriously. Like Narcos, Dope Thief doesn’t lose sight of the essential humanity of its drug-dealing heroes, while still refusing to flinch away from the damage done by the product they peddle. It is a delicate tonal balance, but one that Dope Thief‘s twisty story successfully pulls off.

While the plot might be built from parts borrowed from darker, more self-serious shows, Dope Thief is a breath of fresh air in the busy crime drama genre. For all the similarities between the show’s plot and the storylines of Narcos and The Wire, it is Apple TV’s other recent crime dramedy, Your Friends and Neighbors, that Dope Thief really brings to mind.

Like that Jon Hamm vehicle, the series doubles as both a character study and a dark crime thriller about desperate people turning to desperate measures. Like the characters of The Wire and Narcos, the protagonists of Dope Thief are never far from facing the brutal reality of the drug trade, but the money and its promise always drag them back in despite the danger.
