One of the best parts of Netflix is that the streaming service often gives lesser-known shows a second chance to shine. Several series, such as Suits, Schitt’s Creek, and Manifest, that aired on other networks all gained a ton of new fans when Netflix decided to pluck them up. This means that even if you’ve missed catching a show on its first airing, you can still binge a title that’s worthy of your attention. Now, there’s one more hilarious sitcom that is bound to be enjoyed by even more viewers with its recent drop on Netflix this week.
What Is ‘St. Denis Medical’ About?
The mockumentary genre has been utilized in countless television shows — everything from The Office and Modern Family to What We Do in the Shadows and Parks and Recreation. But there’s one sitcom currently airing that is using that format for even more hysterically funny results. St. Denis Medical, now in its second season on NBC, follows the dysfunctional team of doctors and nurses that work in a second-rate emergency room in an Oregon hospital. The medical staff is devoted to their work, but they also tend to get involved in kooky scenarios. This results in countless humorous situations, both with their patients and with their co-workers. The comedy, which first aired in November 2024, is brought to you by the team behind Superstore, and with a stellar cast, it never fails to leave you laughing. Whether the series is exploring what it’s like to be a hardworking nurse (with little respect and low pay) or an exasperated hospital administrator, St. Denis Medical episodes are chock-full of relatable experiences, as well as silly pratfalls.
‘St. Denis Medical’ Is a Laugh-Filled Comedy With an Incredible Cast
St. Denis Medical is a traditional sitcom in that most storylines are contained within each 30-minute episode. How will the staff deal with a possible hex that’s been placed on the hospital? Can one empathetic nurse actually follow through with firing one of her co-workers? Who will win the annual dance competition at the fundraising event? All of these light-hearted narratives play out in an endlessly funny and entertaining way. But the series also has several long-running storylines that provide a solid, grounding throughline for the show. The head administrator, Joyce Henderson (Wendi McLendon-Covey), does her best to keep the hospital afloat with limited funding (despite her dreams of making St. Denis a top-notch facility). And, of course, there’s a compelling will-they-won’t-they romance between newbie nurse Matt (Mekki Leeper) and his confident colleague, Serena (Kahyun Kim), that ensures you’ll want to keep zooming ahead to each new episode.
The sitcom has enough exciting storylines to keep your attention, but St. Denis Medical is an outstanding series because of its impressive and wildly talented cast. McLendon-Covey is a riot as the quirky Joyce, and her relationship with the goofy Sanderson (Steve Little) is nothing short of brilliant hilarity. Comedy legend David Alan Grier is also spot-on as the curmudgeonly Ron, who somehow always finds himself in the middle of the hospital hijinks. Allison Tolman is fantastic as Alex, who might not be as zany as some of the other characters, but Tolman manages to constantly show off her impeccable comedic timing.
The 15 Best TV Medical Comedies, Ranked
Doctor, I think this list’s funny bone needs work done, stat!
Among a cast of hilarious people, Josh Lawson is a stand-out as the cocky, narcissistic doctor, Bruce, who is often at the center of the comedy’s funniest storylines. All of these actors work together to create a comedy that sings in every single episode. Plus, if you were a fan of Superstore, the series has cast several alums, including Kaliko Kauahi and Nico Santos, to remind you how talented those actors are.
Now that St. Denis Medical is available on Netflix, you can easily binge the first 18 episodes. While NBC is still airing Season 2, and Season 3 has already been greenlit, there’s still plenty of time to get invested in the lives of these characters. Although the underrated series has sort of managed to fly under the radar up until now, St. Denis Medical is incredibly deserving of a place on your must-watch list.
Season 1 of St. Denis Medical is available to stream on Netflix in the U.S. Season 2 is currently airing on NBC, with new episodes on Monday nights.
