Things haven’t been easy for Timothy McGee, but he remains to stay in NCIS, and he finally explained why. As the longest-serving cast member of the CBS procedural, Sean Murray’s character holds a special place in so many fans’ hearts. While not part of Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ original team, it’s difficult to think about a time in NCIS‘s history that McGee wasn’t part of. That said, it’s no secret that maintaining his place in the show has come with its own set of challenges.
NCIS‘s 2025-2026 TV cycle has been transformative for the show as a whole, as it has seen so many game-changing events that will usher it towards the next season. For McGee, that includes finding out that he has a secret son from a relationship he had 18 years ago. This shakes up his personal arc, but his professional life remains in limbo, as he’s stuck with no clear way to move upward — something that he has been dealing now for years. The stagnation could have forced him to leave, but he hasn’t and there’s an understandable reason why.
Timothy McGee Effectively Confirmed His Fear Of The Unknown In NCIS Season 23
Considering everything that has happened in NCIS season 23, there has been barely any time to slow down for Alden Parker and his agents. Even after Director Leon Vance’s death, the team had to immediately deal with the chaotic Fleet Week, which robbed viewers of a proper funeral scene for the beloved character. That said, in one of the rare quiet moments of the year, Vance got vulnerable during his heart-to-heart talk with Ellie Bishop, as they discussed the way she left MCRT.
Apparently, McGee didn’t have any kind of animosity towards Bishop, instead, understanding her need to seek something more out of her life, hence why she made the bold choice to be an undercover operative. In addition to that, he also lauded her bravery for going into the unknown and not being crippled by fear of uncertainty. This offered a rare insight into McGee’s perspective on people leaving MCRT. Until Ellie, those who left the team were forced by their predicaments. However, she chose to leave because she wanted to take a risk and push herself.
CBS Future-Proofs NCIS For Timothy McGee’s MCRT Exit
Timothy McGee’s departure from MCRT is inevitable at this point, and CBS is making sure that NCIS is all ready when that finally happens.
This effectively established McGee’s own fears of stepping out of what he knows, and considering how long he has been with the MCRT, it’s understandable. Even when he sought to make a change, he only did it in the confines of the agency, applying to be Deputy Director — a role that he definitely deserved. When that didn’t happen, he kind of gave up on the idea of moving altogether.
Will McGee Ever Leave NCIS?
As the current face of NCIS, losing McGee is arguably the worst case scenario for the show’s future — assuming that it will continue to run on CBS for years to come. The last few years have been tumultuous and now that the series is at the tail end of a difficult rebirth, it needs stability more than anything. It’s safe to say that Murray’s character will remain a player in NCIS, as long as he chooses to remain in the series.
The great thing is that McGee’s stagnation now has a way of being resolved after years of impasse. Vance’s death clears the path for McGee to move up, being the new director of the agency. Aside from being qualified for the role, this also presents CBS with the easiest way to keep Murray’s character interesting in NCIS without making another massive change. Wasting this opportunity would be a colossal mistake.
