Days after it was confirmed that Idris Elba will return for Extraction 3 alongside franchise star Chris Hemsworth and director Sam Hargrave, he’s proving his ability to draw audiences by taking the streamer’s viewership crown. A survival thriller starring Elba, which was first released theatrically in 2022, is currently the number one movie on the domestic Netflix chart. Elba has also been dominating the Apple TV charts with the second season of his thriller series Hijack, which premiered earlier this year. The British star has remained a popular draw for more than three decades, having played roles of all kinds across genres as diverse as crime and comedy.
His 2022 movie was directed by the Icelandic filmmaker Baltasar Kormákur, best known for the hit survival thriller Everest. In addition to acclaimed movies in Europe, Kormákur has also directed Hollywood action films such as Contraband, starring Mark Wahlberg, and 2 Guns, starring Wahlberg and Denzel Washington. However, he seems to be a specialist in the survival thriller genre. Besides Everest, he also directed the 2018 film Adrift, starring Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin, and is set to release Apex later this month, starring Charlize Theron and Taron Egerton. In 2017, five years before working with Kormákur, Elba starred in the survival thriller The Mountain Between Us.

Idris Elba’s Survival Thriller Is the Perfect Lead-In for ‘Apex’
His 2022 film is called Beast. It follows a widowed father, played by Elba, who visits a South African big game reserve with his two teenage daughters. Chaos erupts when they are attacked by a man-eating lion. The movie was a modest box-office hit, grossing approximately $60 million worldwide against a reported budget of $36 million. It received mixed-to-positive reviews upon release, and now holds a 68% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The aggregator website’s consensus reads, “Want to watch Idris Elba fight a lion? The admirably lean yet ultimately disposable Beast is just the movie you’re looking for.” According to FlixPatrol, Beast was the number one movie on the domestic Netflix chart this week. The movie also featured Sharlto Copley in a colorful supporting role.
