Gone are the days of Toy Story 3 and The Prince of Egypt, of Aladdin and The Lion King. The biggest blockbuster of 2026 will likely be The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, a sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which was released to record-breaking success in 2023. Based on the landmark video game property, The Super Mario Bros. Movie featured the voice talents of Chris Pratt and grossed $1.3 billion worldwide. This is only marginally less than the $1.4 billion that Barbie pulled that same year, and around $400 million more than Oppenheimer‘s final haul. What made the film’s success all the sweeter was that Universal found a new franchise to rely on alongside the Despicable Me series, and that it cost roughly half of what Pixar usually spends on its tent poles.
For instance, Pixar’s latest film, Hoppers, cost around $150 million and has so far grossed $300 million worldwide. The Super Mario Bros. Movie hit this number in one week alone and was produced on a reported budget of $100 million. It arrived in the wake of similar animated films that were clearly made to capitalize on IP. They could be made-up movies produced by Seth Rogen‘s character in The Studio, and you wouldn’t know the difference. Among the earliest in this wave was The LEGO Movie, which defied expectations to emerge as a critical and commercial hit. Then came The Angry Birds Movie, which received mixed reviews but grossed $352 million worldwide. However, not every movie that followed had similar creative integrity. Now, one of the most infamous examples of this era in animation is set to leave Netflix just as The Super Mario Galaxy Movie lands in theaters.

Even the Worst Animated Movie Ever Made Grossed More Than $200 Million Worldwide
It’s almost as if the streamer is concerned about over-stimulating the children, but not really. The film in question is The Emoji Movie, whose script was co-written by The White Lotus creator Mike White. The film’s voice cast included James Corden, T.J. Miller, Christina Aguilera, Anna Faris, Maya Rudolph, and Patrick Stewart, who recently voiced a severed pig’s head in Prime Video’s Bait. The Emoji Movie was a bona fide hit, grossing more than $215 million worldwide against a reported budget of $50 million. But it was so ruthlessly panned that Sony didn’t dare make a sequel. It now holds a 6% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. According to What’s On Netflix, The Emoji Movie will leave Netflix on May 1. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
