New 5-Part Horror Supernatural Thriller Debuts To Rare Rotten Tomatoes Score

The strong year for horror-infused supernatural thrillers continues.

That specific subgenre has had a strong year across streaming platforms. Widow’s Bay is likely the strongest example, with its acclaim, devoted audience, and trove of Emmy nominations. But there’s also been The Terror on AMC and AMC+, as the latest installment of the Ridley Scott-produced anthology provided a truly horrifying look at what it’s like to be placed in a system where you have no control.

The East Palace on Netflix is a more recent example. Since the show’s relatively quiet debut in June, it has been met with positive reviews and steady buzz online that has translated into strong viewership. The eight-episode drama, focusing on vengeful spirits, has spent four weeks in the Top 10. As of this writing, it’s still trending highly in 13 countries.

Possession, a new five-part supernatural thriller, has debuted to a rare perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes. As of this writing, the score is based on five reviews and may fluctuate as more reviews are added. The Average of Rated Reviews, which accounts for critic reviews with letter or numerical ratings, sits at 6.50 out of 10.

Possession focuses on Claudia (Loki and The Morning Show‘s Gugu Mbatha-Raw), an ambitious young lawyer who travels to Jamaica to challenge an inheritance claim. The claim is made by a local man, Cudjoe East (Sheldon Shepherd), against the wealthy aristocrat Oliver Connaught (played by Elementary lead star Jonny Lee Miller). The case takes a turn for the unsettling when Claudia discovers that the disputed estate is the place “that has haunted her nightmares”, according to the official synopsis. That place is Hope Hill, the Connaught family’s former plantation.

The five-part drama is created by Karla Crome, who previously worked on Netflix’s Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, with Storm Saulter directing. It is available on Sky in the UK and Ireland, with NBCUniversal Global TV Distribution handling international sales of the series. Bel Powley, Nadean Rawlins, Sean Gilder, Olunike Adeliyi, Richard Dillane, Diveen Henry, Jack Bandeira, Shantol Jackson, Jeff Crossley, and Safina Simpson also star.

The series doesn’t yet have a U.S. home announced.

Removing the five-parter for Radio Times, David Brown praises Possession for its deft handling of themes. The review also promises audiences that they are in for “the most eyebrow-raising, eyeball-related shock since Jaws.” It, overall, continues a notable 2026 for narratives that blend scares with weighty ideas without sacrificing one for the other.
