New Daredevil Appearance Has Fans Afraid That The Character’s Fate Is Sealed

[

Forget Marvel vs. Capcom—Arc System Works’ 4v4 tag-team fighting game, Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, has become one of Marvel’s most highly anticipated ensemble games in a while. Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls’ Deadpool reveal generated a ton of hype, with the Merc with a Mouth, Loki, and Blade rounding out a handful of peculiar character roster teams that players can mix and match at launch.

Of course, characters who’ve been announced for the playable roster aren’t always as exciting as those who aren’t. It’s dizzying to think about how many more characters will be added to the game in the future if it’s true that Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls will be supported for the next 10 years, and, while one immensely popular street-level Marvel character would otherwise seem like a shoo-in at some point, Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls may have already ruled them out.

Like many fighting games before it, Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls features themed stages with dynamic, Easter egg-laden backgrounds. These stages include remarkable and iconic landmarks from the Marvel comic book source material that are pertinent to the game’s story and/or characters, such as Knowhere, the Savage Land, and Wakanda.

A fun element of these stages is the cameo characters they feature in the background. For example, a considerable number of X-Men characters are seen standing around, including Angel, Beast, Colossus, Nightcrawler Professor X, and Psylocke. If fighting game stage background tradition persists, fans are confident this means that anyone who has a background cameo has a far lower likelihood of becoming a playable character themselves, and it might even be an effective confirmation that they’ll never make it onto the roster.

On X, fans like Daredevil Gaming Updates are now taking Matt Murdock and Daredevil’s stage background cameos in Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls as a guarantee that he won’t be playable. This would be especially tragic, too, since Daredevil was also already part of a stage background in Marvel vs. Capcom 3, and thus, this continues his sad legacy of not making it into the playable roster.

User clfjmprr scoffs at the fact that “one of the most iconic fighters in Marvel has never been a fighter in a fighting game,” and even though this is true in the sense of the FGC landscape, Daredevil was in the fighting game Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects. Regardless, their point stands, and user greendevin15 is “still holding out hope for him.”

It seems like an inevitability that Daredevil will become a DLC character for Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls within the next 10 years, breaking free from the shackles of his stage background appearances in order to synergize with the character’s Marvel Cinematic Universe popularity. However, Daredevil appearing in the background at all makes that seem unlikely, unless Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls has plans to add all of its current stage background characters to the roster sooner or later.

Instead, maybe Elektra could have Daredevil’s place on the roster, even going as far as to inherit her Daredevil costume from Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto’s Daredevil run in Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls’ original character design. Nonetheless, it’ll be intriguing to see who arrives in Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls’ first batch of post-launch DLC characters.

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is scheduled to be released for PC and PS5 on August 6, 2026.
