God of War has bounced from one mythology to another in the past, but so far, each game has stuck with a fairly insular approach. While strains of the past emphasis on Greek mythology are still present in the Norse games, they’re largely committed to their own setting.
The next God of War title, however, may be taking a very different approach. As of late, rumors have suggested that the series will undergo a major shift, potentially leaping to an Egyptian setting and moving to a new protagonist. Now, a report from MP1st claims that the next entry will cover multiple mythologies.
God Of War’s Return Is Imminent
According to MP1st, the next God of War “will also explore several mythologies such as Mayan and more,” citing a recent Reddit comment from an early leaker of the game’s details. Additionally, MP1st claims that East Asian mythologies will play a role in the next God of War, including “elements from Chinese and Japanese mythologies.”
Moreover, it sounds like we won’t have long to wait until some of these elements are officially revealed to the public. A recent Insider Gaming podcast episode made the claim that “the next mainline one” is due to be announced this month. A State of Play showcase has also been rumored for this month — for April 16, in fact, which is starting to look like it might not be an accurate date — and if the broadcast happens, it would be the perfect venue for some God of War news.
A God Of War Game Without Kratos Could Work
Kratos’ identity might lend its name to the God of War series, but the next title might star his deceased wife Faye instead. While it might be a weird transition for fans, God of WarRagnarök worked as an appropriate conclusion to Kratos’ story, making the switch to a new character perfectly logical. Apparently, Merlin will also appear in the form of a talking sword, throwing one more source of legend into the mix.
If the rumors are true, we should see for ourselves soon enough. I’m not the biggest fan of the reboot games, but plenty of people are, so I’ll be happy for them to get another game to look forward to. With a big shift in subject on the way, they might even shake things up enough to recapture my interest as well. Let’s just hope God of War‘s story doesn’t get too lost among the incoming shuffle of mythologies.
