Netflix has another true crime hit on their hands.
After launching with a library of pre-existing titles, the streaming service first became known for English-language live-action scripted streaming series, including their early successes House of Cards and Orange is the New Black. Over the years, they have expanded their slate to include blockbuster movies (Red Notice, Carry-On), reality series (Love is Blind, Love on the Spectrum), interactive specials (Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend), animation (KPop Demon Hunters, BoJack Horseman), international series (Squid Game, Money Heist), and true crime documentaries (Making a Murderer, Tiger King).

Netflix’s latest popular true crime documentary is Maternal Instinct, which dropped on the platform on June 12. It follows a wealthy woman who falls for a hog trapper and soon announces her pregnancy, only to have a web of lies hiding a mysterious crime unravel when she is pulled over by the police and claims to have given birth in the car. The feature was directed by Jessica Dimmock, a true crime veteran who also helmed 2018’s Flint Town and the 2022 docuseries Crime Scene: The Texas Killing Fields.
The movie more or less instantly shot to the top of Netflix‘s daily chart of the Top 10 most watched movies in the United States, landing at No. 1 on June 13 and maintaining that position on June 14. At the time of writing, it is outpacing a number of major streaming movies on the chart, including the new Jennifer Lopez rom-com Office Romance (No. 2), the crime thriller Colors of Evil: Black (No. 4), the recent animated theatrical hit GOAT (No. 6), and the Oscar-nominated music biopic Song Sung Blue (No. 8).
FlixPatrol, which uses proprietary methodology to determine streaming success, also reports that Maternal Instinct is the No. 4 Netflix movie globally, only behind the Spanish-language thriller The Marked Woman (No. 3), Colors of Evil: Black (No. 2), and 2026’s Office Romance (No. 1), outpacing titles including the Bollywood horror-comedy Bhooth Bangla (No. 5) and the Netflix original animated movie Swapped (No. 7).
According to their data, Maternal Instinct is on the Netflix Top 10 chart in more than five dozen individual territories worldwide. In addition to the United States, it is No. 1 in eight other territories, namely Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, and the United Kingdom. In all the aforementioned territories, the No. 2 title is either Office Romance or Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (which is not available in the U.S.).
It ultimately remains to be seen how well Maternal Instinct performs on the charts in the long run. However, if its swift rise blossoms into enduring viewership, it could ultimately land among the wide roster of iconic Netflix true crime titles. In addition to Tiger King and Making a Murderer, this includes the documentaries The Tinder Swindler, Unknown Number: The High School Catfish, and Don’t F**k with Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer, as well as dramatized series such as Inventing Anna, Mindhunter, and Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.
