New Sofia Coppola Movie Officially Releases On HBO Max Next Month

[

A new movie you may have missed from lauded filmmaker Sofia Coppola is soon hitting streaming.

Coppola is the Oscar-winning screenwriter of the original screenplay for Lost in Translation, also the director of this movie and several more acclaimed titles. Most are aware of her 2023 feature-length directorial credit, Priscilla, a biopic based on Priscilla Presley’s memoir Elvis and Me. Following this A24-backed hit, Coppola directed the documentary Marc by Sofia, which was released theatrically earlier this year.

Per Warner Bros., Marc by Sofia will be released on HBO Max on July 16. The documentary serves as Coppola’s account of the life and career of fashion designer Marc Jacobs, the featured cast list comprising Jacobs, Coppola, Grace Coddington, Kim Gordon, Spike Jonze, and Chloë Sevigny (all as themselves). Coppola’s first-ever nonfiction feature film had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival in September 2025.

Coppola is a longtime friend of Jacobs and thus constructed her documentary with personal insight. It cuts between Jacobs’ preparation for his “paper doll” runway show in 2024 and Coppola interviewing him about his life, education, and work. However, Marc by Sofia wasn’t a critical hit to match Coppola’s best movies: The A24 documentary has a 74% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 54% on Metacritic.

Amid the lukewarm reception, Gregory Nussen wrote a generally positive review of Marc by Sofia for ScreenRant, calling it “a stirring vision of a singular artist in process, made by a fellow unique voice who shares the niche fact of having a last name that sometimes overshadows their work.

Coppola’s film is not as self-referential,” Nussen goes on to say, “but there is an implicit redirection that she achieves through looking at her longtime friend, and in so doing has made a documentary on two people that is both intellectually rigorous and refreshingly intimate.Following its festival premiere, Marc by Sofia hit domestic theaters in March 2026, grossing only $283 thousand.

Documentaries aren’t typically box office hits, but some of the most populist ones have still raked in millions. But now, like many other soft theatrical releases, Marc by Sofia stands to become a streaming hit, drawing in audiences with its well-known names and accessibility. Its streaming release will also keep Coppola’s name alive as she works on her next project, which is something of a mystery.

In March 2026, a planned new film from Coppola with her frequent collaborator Kirsten Dunst was confirmed to be dead. Coppola was also working on a TV series titled Custom of the Country, based on Edith Wharton’s novel, but shared in 2024 that Apple TV had pulled its funding. The project has now re-entered development as a movie starring Sydney Sweeney.

Coppola’s impressive filmography includes The Bling Ring, The Beguiled, Lost in Translation, The Virgin Suicides, and Marie Antoinette. Marc by Sofia was a creative departure, which some will say didn’t pay off, but a filmmaker with her laurels should be able to take some risks. Now, more viewers may come to appreciate the quiet documentary, and hopefully, Coppola will move forward with an exciting new project.

Marc by Sofia will be available to stream on HBO Max from July 16, 2026.
