New Steam Machine Release Window Officially Dropped By Valve

[

Valve has provided a long-awaited update to the Steam Machine‘s release plans. Potential customers have been patiently expecting key information on the new SteamOS gaming PC for months now, namely when it will release and how much it will cost. We still do not have an answer to the latter, but Valve has at least narrowed the Steam Machine’s release window in an update to Steam’s Verified program.

In a post directly on Steam, Valve has revealed that both the Steam Machine and the Steam Frame will release in summer 2026. Both devices were previously only confirmed to still be on track for release sometime this year. The announcement is just one line in another bit of pre-release preparation: an update on how Steam verifies games for Valve’s proprietary hardware. “Today we are expanding the Verified program to include Steam Machine and Steam Frame,” the post says, “both of which are shipping this summer.”

For those familiar with the (now more expensive) Steam Deck, the Verified program is simply expanding to provide the same insight on which games are compatible with the Machine and Frame. “The goal is to help customers understand the out-of-box experience for a given title on these new devices,” Valve says, “and how smoothly a game will run with no user work or configuration required.” Valve is essentially vetting games in order to place Verified designators on those that work well on the Steam Machine.

The requirements for Steam Machine Verified are nearly identical to Steam Deck Verified,” meaning there are similar thresholds for default graphics settings, control schemes, and compatibility with SteamOS and the Proton compatibility layer it uses to play Windows games. This is largely an ease-of-use feature for Steam. It lets Steam Deck (and soon Machine and Frame) owners know at a glance if a title will perform admirably on their hardware.

Since the Steam Machine “is roughly six times as powerful as a Steam Deck,” the requirements are not the exact same, and Valve is “testing every title on Machine that fell below our performance requirements on Deck.” The Verified program has been a huge help on Steam Deck, and will go a long way in fulfilling the Machine’s hardware niche halfway between gaming PC and traditional console. The Steam Frame Standalone Verified program will similarly show users which games can run natively on the VR headset, without streaming from a PC.

Despite now having a narrower release window – sometime in the next few months – the Steam Machine remains without a price tag, and cannot be preordered. There is still no indication of when either of these will change. If the release is earlier in the summer, preorders could go live any day now, but if it’s later, say, in September, we could be waiting a while longer.

Knowing that the Verified program will be extended to encompass the Machine and Frame makes the devices all that more attractive, but many will remain undecided on a purchase until prices are finally revealed. Valve’s Steam Machine is coming soon, in summer 2026, but there are still some critical unknowns to consider.
