Warning: spoilers for Only Murders in the Building season 5 ahead.
The finale episode of Only Murders in the Building season 5 finally revealed who killed Lester (Teddy Coluca) and who is set to be The Arconia’s next victim, but there’s a twist – the sixth season has been confirmed and it’s going to be set in the UK.
Returning for a further 10 episodes, Disney+ said in a press statement: “The series will venture overseas for the first time, with the beloved crime-solving trio leaving New York City to investigate London’s newest mystery.”
Just as season 5 was winding down, our leading trio found Cinda Canning (Tina Fey) – who has been our voiceover since the beginning – dead on the street. How does this link to London? We’re yet to find out, but we can let our imaginations run wild in the meantime.
Only Murders in the Building season 6 needs to crossover with Midsomer Murders for two obvious reasons
When I think of Only Murders in the Building, I think of a TV show that somehow remains a fantastic watch even when it starts to not make much sense. After five seasons of people mysteriously dying in one building, why are residents still living there? How many more murders can one building have?
The same can be said for British TV stalwart, Midsomer Murders. For those unfamiliar, the premise is in the title – local detectives try to solve different murders happening in and around the village of Midsomer. The show has been going since 1997, so I’m surprised there’s still anybody around left to kill at this point.
So, imagine Oliver (Martin Short), Charles (Steve Martin) and Mabel (Selena Gomez) arriving at Heathrow Terminal 5, only to be taken to Midsomer to deal with the countryside version of their New York City problems. It’s a crossover that would hardly make any sense, but I think we’ve already crossed the bridge of sense in both shows.
As a Brit, I can safely say that we’re the GOAT at writing a whodunnit story. Authors Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie started us off on a journey that eventually led us to the likes of Line of Duty, Broadchurch, and Happy Valley. But there’s always been a place for enough camp to match one of Oliver’s musicals, and that’s where something like Midsomer Murders comes in.
It would be silly of Only Murders in the Building season 6 not to honor our crime prestige since they’re coming here, but they might as well as have fun with it (rather than taking the BBC drama route of deadly serious).
But there’s another reason for this pairing to make sense – Disney+ and ITV have just struck a new streaming deal.
Now, you can find more British original dramas at the click of a button on Disney+ thanks to ITV integrating its back catalog into the streaming service. And guess which show is included? That’s right, Midsomer Murders.
You can now stream both shows in exactly the same place, so you get my drift… this is a dynamic drama that’s writing itself. I’ll be waiting for my royalties check in the post.
