2026 is an exciting year to be an Avatar fan. Not only was Season 2 of Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action series released, but the highly anticipated animated feature, Avatar: Aang, The Last Airbender, also finally entered streaming and dominated the charts, despite getting leaked early in the year. With the upcoming series, Avatar: Seven Havens, set to premiere later this year, fans are tuning in to the highly acclaimed franchise once more, putting it back on the streaming charts.
The Avatar franchise began in 2005 and was created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. The series takes place in a world where humans can control one of the four elements — water, earth, fire, and air — but one person, called the Avatar, can control all four and is seen as a bridge between the humans and the spirit world. The first installment, called Avatar: The Last Airbender, followed a 12-year-old Avatar named Aang (Zach Tyler Eisen), who, after being frozen in an iceberg for 100 years, was freed, learned that his entire culture was wiped out, and was tasked with ending the 100-year war caused by the Fire Nation and restoring peace to the world. Following the show’s success, a sequel was released four years later.
Avatar: The Legend of Korra was the next installment of the Avatar franchise, which takes place 70 years after the events of The Last Airbender, and follows a new Avatar named Korra (Janet Varney), who faces new threats and problems that are different from the ones Aang faced during his time. Recently, The Legend of Korra returned to the streaming charts, sitting at #8 on Paramount+ Top 10 TV Shows worldwide, sitting between SEAL Team and Tulsa King. One reason for its return is that the series takes place years before the latest Avatar movie, Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, which came out on streaming recently and still dominates Paramount+’s Top 10 Movies worldwide, sitting at #1.

What’s Next For the Avatar Franchise?
The Avatar franchise is not stopping anytime soon, as more content is set to come out in the coming months. The first is the third installment of the animated Avatar TV series, Avatar: Seven Havens, and is scheduled to come out this October on Paramount+. This new show will focus on the next Avatar, a young Earthbender named Pavi (Saheli Khan). According to the show’s premise, this young Avatar has become an enemy of both humans and the spirits and is now seen as “humanity’s destroyer.” Additionally, Season 3 of Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender has been greenlit since the release of Season 1 in 2024, and will adapt Book 3: Fire. Just like the animated series, Team Avatar will attempt to find Aang (Gordon Cormier) a firebending teacher, and will need to stop King Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim) from taking over the world during Sozin’s Comet. A release date has not been set, but Season 3 was filmed back-to-back with Season 2 and has already wrapped.
