If you’re looking for something new to play to scratch that open-world itch, a brand-new free RPG has landed on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. The best part is, you don’t need a subscription to PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass to check this one out. Basically, if you have Crimson Desert FOMO, this one is for you.
Crimson Desert has established itself as one of the most popular games of the year since launching last month. Developer Pearl Abyss has rolled out multiple updates in an impressive span of time, making the open-world fantasy RPG a ton of fun to play after a fairly bumpy launch. Of course, not everyone can afford Crimson Desert right now, and while this free alternative is hardly on exactly the same level as Pearl Abyss’ offering, it’s a slice of open-world fun that won’t cost you a dime.
Welcome To Aetheria
We’ve got fun and games
Aetheria is one of the most interesting games I’ve seen in a while, mostly because it’s an open-world RPG built entirely within the mega popular battle royale, Fortnite. Creator CooliSushi has spent three years building this game in Fortnite‘s Unreal Editor, and considering this is a solo effort, it’s incredibly impressive. Take a look at Aetheria in action below.
Your character is able to explore a vast fantasy world, fight monsters, and generally take in the sights. It obviously doesn’t offer a story on the level of something like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, but if you crave some mindless open-world exploration, you could do a lot worse than Aetheria.
Those that have taken the time to check Aetheria certainly seem to be enjoying it, too. “Playing it now and it’s really good. I can’t believe this is Fortnite to be honest,” writes one gamer.
Another writes: “I feel amazed at the same time, but there’s also this sense of despair because I can’t even imagine how it’s made.”
A third adds: “This is what I wanted out of UEFN, something that is distinct and looks fun even dabbling into another genre of game. They should put this on discovery way more.”
If you want to try this one out for yourself, all you have to do is enter the map code 1314-6986-8879 into Fortnite. Given the time and effort its creator clearly put into it, you really should give it a go. It might not be Crimson Desert, but you can’t beat the low, low price of nothing at all.
