PlayStation Officially Drops New 9/10 Free Game, Zero PS Plus Required

PlayStation Plus members have had a frustrating time over the past few years, with several price increases for each membership level in that time, including a recent price increase in May that bumped up the cost of monthly and quarterly subscription prices. That said, Sony has taken steps to justify these cost increases, introducing a wave of over 40 new free games for qualifying members.

And while PlayStation Plus subscribers benefit from free new games on a regular basis and are starting to get more value for the higher prices, it isn’t every day that PlayStation drops free games that don’t require a PS Plus membership at all. However, there’s a brand-new addition to the PlayStation library of games that’s highly rated among users and is completely free to download and keep forever (via the PS Store).

If you’re looking for a new game to try out for free on PlayStation, gamers can officially play War Robots as of May 27, a new free-to-play multiplayer mech shooter that fans of the Armored Core franchise and games like MechWarrior or Titanfall will definitely want to give a shot. It’s officially free to download and play as long as you have an active internet connection (i.e., Online Play Required), and it supports up to 12-player, 6v6 PvP matches.

War Robots features “over 50 robots with unique designs and powers [that] let you find a style to call your own,” with highly customizable weapons, suits, pilots, and drones featuring various styles and gameplay strategies. Gameplay involves teaming up with other Mechs in your very own clan and taking on other clans in epic battles spanning various maps and locations, and the game is highly rated so far on the PlayStation store, with 4 out of 5 stars and nearly 70% 5-star ratings as of this writing.

It’s important to note here that War Robots is NOT the same as War Robots: Frontiers, though they are quite similar. The version that was recently made available on PlayStation is a ported version of the original mobile game from 2014, while Frontiers is a full remake of War Robots designed in Unreal Engine 5. However, both games are free to download on the PlayStation store and both offer players similarly exciting and original mech-warrior combat.

This new free release is one of several promotional offers that don’t require PlayStation Plus as part of Sony’s Days of Play promotion this year, with the promotional period gearing up for the big State of Play event earlier today.
