Pokémon is having a heck of a year on its 30th anniversary, with tons of different subfranchises firing on all cylinders. The next step is Pokémon Champions, which is coming very soon to Switch 2 (and later to mobile devices).
Thanks to info from Centro Leaks on X, we have a better idea of how Pokémon Champions will work with Pokémon Home, and fans aren’t loving it.
Pokémon Champions Has Some Provisos
More Than We Knew
Now that Champions is set to arrive worldwide very soon, we have a ton of clarification on its systems. Here is the latest info:
- You can send Pokémon to visit Pokémon Champions from the Pokémon Home app.
- You can send up to 30 Pokémon at a time, and 1000 Pokémon total.
- Pokémon that are visiting in Champions will become locked in Pokémon Home, you won’t be able to trade them or move them to other games.
- To unlock a visiting Pokémon, you have to go to Pokémon Champions and send back the Pokémon from there.
Naturally, fans aren’t loving all of these extra last-minute rules, particularly folks who don’t pay for Pokémon Home. While it’s very clear that Pokémon won’t “leave” Home (they’ll just be “locked” while connected), free users are not happy.
Free Pokémon Home Users Aren’t Happy
It’ll Be Rough For Them
With this info now coming to light, fans are wondering if they’ll even be able to partake at all: “Really not excited for this app. To fully utilize it you have spend several 100 dollars to have all the games. Plus home. Plus, you need to buy expanded storage space. Plus an NSO subscription. Plus a premium pack. Right there is more than the cost of the Switch 2.”
Others are just not going to deal with it, and will painstakingly cycle 30 Pokémon in at a time: “I’m not paying the monthly home subscription. I’ll use the 30 free slots and rotate from game to game and that will be all.”
There are also many people who pay for Home, and are seemingly fine with the system: “1000 Pokémon total is good. I was worried about how limited the space would be. I have a lot of Pokémon that I played with competitively in Gens 4 through Gen 6 that I severely want to use and Pokémon from Gens 7-9 I want to try out. Looking forward to learning modern competitive Pokémon.”
In addition to the monetization efforts on Pokémon Champions, there’s also this hurdle for free Pokémon Home users to cross. It’s going to be a tough time for a subset of fans unless something changes.
