9-1-1 has been such a success on ABC that it can be easy to forget the series actually originated on Fox. The network eventually parted ways with the hit procedural amid budget and financial constraints, allowing ABC to swoop in and turn it into one of television’s biggest dramas. Since then, Fox has tried to find a worthy replacement with shows like 9-1-1: Lone Star and Rescue: Hi-Surf, but neither has quite filled the void. Now, after all these years, Fox may have finally found the perfect successor, and it’s coming in the form of a reboot of one of the most iconic TV shows of the ’90s.
Fox has officially moved forward with a reboot of Baywatch. The original series first premiered on the network in 1989 and went on to become a full-blown pop culture phenomenon, eventually running for 11 seasons. Led by David Hasselhoff, Pamela Anderson, and Yasmine Bleeth, Baywatch turned the lives of California lifeguards into appointment television loaded with beachside rescues, romance, and personal drama. Now, Arrow and Suits: LAalum Stephen Amell is stepping into the spotlight as the new lead. Amell will play an adult Hobie Buchannon, the son of Hasselhoff’s Mitch Buchannon, giving the reboot a direct connection to the original series while putting a familiar name at the center of its next generation of lifeguards.
The Baywatch reboot’s debut season will consist of 12 episodes, with Fox to premiere the series at midseason in January 2027, though an exact premiere date has yet to be announced. Baywatch will once again aim to serve a broad audience as a new report reveals that Prime Video has picked up the streaming rights across several international territories, including Italy, Germany, France, Spain, Portugal, Benelux, Switzerland, Austria, Turkey, Canada, Latin America, and India. The deal will also give Prime Video the rights to stream the complete Baywatch back catalog, giving subscribers a chance to revisit the original series alongside the new reboot. Sky will handle the series across the UK and Ireland, while Hulu holds the exclusive streaming rights in the U.S., with new episodes becoming available the day after their Fox premiere.

Fox’s ‘Baywatch’ Reboot Will Bring Back a Fan-favorite
Fox’s Baywatch reboot is being positioned as a continuation of the franchise’s legacy, with a new generation of lifeguards taking over the beach. At the center of it all is Hobie Buchannon, who has followed in his father’s footsteps and now serves as captain of the Baywatch team, protecting the shores of Southern California while training a new crop of rookie lifeguards. However, Hobie’s carefully established life is thrown into chaos when a daughter he never knew he had suddenly shows up at his doorstep, hoping to become part of the Buchannon family legacy.
Hobie’s daughter, Charlie, will be played by Jessica Belkin (Last Straw), with Shay Mitchell as Trina, Hassie Harrison as Nat, Thaddeus LaGrone as Brad, Noah Beck as Luke, and Brooks Nader as Selene rounding out the supporting cast. The reboot will also bring back a major piece of Baywatch history, withDavid Chokachi reprising his role as fan-favorite lifeguard Cody Madison. This time around, Cody will serve as a mentor to Hobie and run The Shoreline, described as “the unofficially official Baywatch bar-and-grill.” That doesn’t mean he’s completely hanging up his rescue gear, though, as Cody will occasionally join the team on rescue operations, bringing some much-needed experience to the new generation. And if you’re hoping to see more familiar faces, there’s reason to keep watching as Fox has indicated that the door remains open for additional legacy stars to return in cameo roles.
