Prime Video’s 3-Part Fantasy Series Is So Good, It Sparked a Passionate Fan Campaign

No show can succeed without fans, no matter how good they are. Yet while many have a dedicated audience, only a few beloved series inspire their fans to organize an entire campaign around them. Prime Video’s The Wheel of Time first premiered in 2021, when the fantasy genre was rapidly growing on streaming. Known for its compelling characters and expansive world-building, The Wheel of Time is among the best shows in the genre as it tells an epic story of good and evil and the unassuming heroes who rise to face the threat.

Based on Robert Jordan‘s 14-book series of the same name, The Wheel of Time received plenty of criticism for deviations from the source material, but that wasn’t the only attention it attracted, building a loyal fanbase over its three seasons. Unfortunately, even that audience wasn’t a guarantee for success, and the series was abruptly canceled after Season 3. However, fans launched a vocal campaign to save The Wheel of Time, and although the series didn’t succeed in securing a fourth season, the widespread reaction proved just how many people loved the show.

‘The Wheel of Time’ Is One of the Best Fantasy Series on Television

It’s no wonder The Wheel of Time inspired such dedication among its fans, as it managed to stand out in the ever-growing landscape of epic fantasy shows. With a far-reaching world, compelling characters, and an action-packed plot, the series quickly draws the audience in as it follows Rand (Josha Stradowski), who has been prophesied to either save the world or destroy it as the prophesied Dragon Reborn, as well as his most loyal friends and dangerous enemies.

The story becomes increasingly more complex as the characters spread out across its immense world, with Rand, Perrin (Marcus Rutherford), Mat (Dónal Finn), Egwene (Madeleine Madden), Nynaeve (Zoë Robins), Moiraine (Rosamund Pike), and several others earning individual storylines that both explore different cultures and highlight their unique strengths. Each character becomes the hero of their own story, which is what makes The Wheel of Time so exciting.

In many ways, the series was hitting its stride in Season 3, as Rand began to accept his role as the Dragon Reborn and more of his foes began enacting their own plans. By the finale, the show had set up several conflicts with the Aes Sedai at war, Perrin protecting the Two Rivers, and the Aiel divided from within. Many of those storylines were only starting to take shape in Season 3, leaving plenty of untapped potential for Prime Video’s adaptation to continue exploring.

‘The Wheel of Time’s Fans Organized a Petition in Response to the Show’s Cancellation

While The Wheel of Time had many elements that attracted fans, the show, unfortunately, couldn’t last. Just a month after the Season 3 finale, Prime Video canceled the series, but they couldn’t have anticipated the fan reaction. Disappointed and dismayed by the news, fans rallied, coordinating a response in an effort to save the show by either convincing Prime Video to change its mind or getting another streamer to pick it up. Together, they launched a campaign that received over 200,000 signatures and remains ongoing. Surpassing their original GoFundMe goal, fans placed billboards promoting their cause in New York, LA, and London.

While it’s disappointing that Prime Video’s The Wheel of Time never got its proper ending, the fan response did have an impact, as the franchise isn’t over, with an animated series, several films, and even a video game in development. Seeing the outpouring of support for the show provides hope that these additional projects will succeed in keeping the story alive. The Wheel of Time deserved better from Prime Video, but the fans, unquestioningly, rose to the occasion by rallying behind one of the best fantasy series on streaming.
