Prime Video will soon become the streaming home of an incredible cyberpunk TV series, which marks the return of one of the greatest stories in the history of sci-fi. The series in question is backed by a long-standing franchise that has one of the most iconic creative legacies in the genre. If executed well, it could become one of the best modern additions to the cyberpunk sci-fi subgenre.
The roots of the cyberpunk subgenre can be traced back to the works of sci-fi authors like Philip K. Dick, but William Gibson is often credited with giving it a solid identity of its own with his debut novel, Neuromancer. Apart from Gibson’s Neuromancer, though, several movies and anime, like The Matrix, Ghost in the Shell, and Blade Runner, also played a crucial role in further establishing a cyberpunk core aesthetic and themes.
Speaking of Ghost in the Shell, it remains one of the longest running cyberpunk franchises of all time. While its 2017 live-action movie was disappointing, most of its anime extensions have been widely praised for their exploitation of identity and consciousness in a world ridden with advanced cybernetic enhancements and AI.
Interestingly, another anime addition to the Ghost in the Shell franchise is officially in the works and is set to land on Prime Video.
The New Ghost In The Shell Anime Can Be The Best Modern Take On The Manga
Set to premiere in July 2026, the new Ghost in the Shell reboot is being developed by Science Saru studio. Science Saru’s involvement with the anime alone spells promise because the studio has previously delivered some of the most incredible modern manga adaptations, like Devilman Crybaby, Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken, Inu-Oh, and Dandadan.
The upcoming anime’s art style in its first teaser also suggests that it will visually be reminiscent of the Ghost in the Shell movie from 1995. Check out its promo below:
Considering how Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex still holds up incredibly well even after all these years, it is hard not to question whether we need another small-screen extension of the franchise. However, considering how the new anime is set to be a closer adaptation of the original Masamune Shirow manga, it could etch its own unique identity into the overarching franchise.
All previous takes on Ghost in the Shell have been far more existential and less satirical than the original manga. The manga, too, has its darker moments, but it avoids taking itself too seriously and is more in tandem with the goofy and non-serious portrayal of cyberpunk in stories from the mid-1980s.
If the anime manages to capture the same comedic tone and irreverent spirit of its source material, it could bring something new to the table and even contrast all previous adaptations. The anime’s art direction already looks incredible, and Science Saru’s involvement with it suggests that, at least from a visual standpoint, it will not disappoint.
How the anime’s English dub will be handled could also determine its fate, especially if it inclines towards the manga’s comical elements. The worldwide streaming rights for the new Ghost in the Shell have been acquired by Amazon Prime Video, and the streaming service also holds an exclusive early release window before the anime gets aired on TV in Tokyo.
Ghost In The Shell Will Be A Part Of An Exciting New Wave Of Cyberpunk Shows
Ghost in the Shell is surprisingly not the only major cyberpunk franchise that is returning to the small screen in 2026. Prime Video will also serve as the streaming home for a new Blade Runner series, Blade Runner 2099, which will serve as a sequel to the previous two movies. While only time will tell whether Blade Runner 2099 will be able to live up to the legacy of its predecessors, it could pave the way for a major cyberpunk renaissance on the small screen.
Apart from Ghost in the Shell and Blade Runner 2099, Apple TV’s Neuromancer is also expected to premiere sometime in 2026. While the adaptation of the seminal William Gibson novel does not have an official release window yet, it has been in production for quite some time.
Considering Apple TV’s history of getting sci-fi adaptations right, its take on Gibson’s Neuromancer could be another big win for the cyberpunk subgenre. If all three shows, Ghost in the Shell, Blade Runner 2099, and Neuromancer, end up performing well, they could pave the way for a new wave of cyberpunk adaptations and franchise revivals.
Hopefully, the two Prime Video franchise extensions and the Apple TV sci-fi adaptation will not disappoint and prove how, despite being challenging, cyberpunk can be perfectly captured on the small screen as well.
