Project Hail Mary Box Office Passes One Final Global Milestone As 3-Month Theatrical Run Nears End

Project Hail Mary’s incredible theater run is nearing its end.

Based on Andy Weir’s novel, the sci-fi adaptation took the world by storm after setting an Amazon record for the biggest debut ever with $80.5 million domestically. Project Hail Mary‘s box-office potential only got better after its March release, as it set more records for the studio in just a matter of weeks. As a result, Amazon extended its theatrical run beyond the 45 days due to its commercial performance.

As Project Hail Mary‘s box office slowed with new releases landing in theaters, the sci-fi thriller managed to cross one and possibly final global milestone. According to Box Office Mojo, it has just surpassed $680 million worldwide, including an incredible $343 million domestically. Project Hail Mary is leaving most theaters with just 291 left. It’ll end its run as 2026’s third-highest-grossing movie behind Michael and Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

With a $200 million budget, Project Hail Mary proved itself to be a box-office sensation. While the Weir adaptation falls short of hitting $700 million, it doesn’t detract from the immense success that the Amazon movie experienced since its March release. Not only did Project Hail Mary break studio records, but it also became the highest-grossing Weir adaptation, breaking the record set by Ridley Scott’s The Martian.

Positive reception and word-of-mouth played a factor in its box-office success. Project Hail Mary reviews highlighted the high-stakes narrative, the heartwarming chemistry between Ryan Gosling’s Ryland Grace and the alien Rocky, and the beautiful visual spectacle of their space mission. With award consideration also in talks, it currently has a 94% critics’ score and a 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

While the sci-fi thriller leaves theaters, it’s already making its way to home viewing. Since mid-May, Project Hail Mary has been available to rent or purchase digitally on sites like Fandango at Home and Vudu. It was also recently confirmed that the Weir adaptation will land on MGM+ streaming on June 18, which coincidentally marks three months after its release. However, Amazon has not addressed whether that access will extend to Prime Video in the future.

Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, Project Hail Mary uncovers an unconventional friendship between a human, Ryland Grace, and an Eridian alien named Rocky. As the relationship evolves, they work together to save their planets as a mysterious organism kills off their suns. Alongside Gosling, the cast features Sandra Hüller, James Ortiz, and Lionel Boyce, while Drew Goddard wrote the screenplay.
