Reacher Takes One Big Step Toward Making Alan Ritchson’s ‘American Bond’ Claim True

Prime Video’s Reacher has seemingly taken one bold step towards convincingly selling the Alan Ritchson character as the “American Bond.” Considering how the hunt for the new on-screen James Bond has been going on for quite some time, it won’t be long before a new young star will be cast for the role. While only time will tell who the next James Bond will be, Reacher is shaping up to be a worthy American replacement.

Interestingly, Alan Ritchson, too, agrees that Jack Reacher can qualify as James Bond’s worthy American counterpart. In an interview (via EW), Alan Ritchson criticized James Bond for being “a little misogynistic and predictable at this point.” He then went on to compare the character with Jack Reacher, calling him more of an “American Bond,” who is only “a little less purposefully cool.“

The comparison is intriguing not only because Jack Reacher is an overpowered detective whose love interests are fleeting, but also because of the delivery of one of his lines. In both the Jack Reacher books and the show, Reacher constantly uses one line that makes him a lot like James Bond, further cementing him as the American Bond replacement.

Reacher Has His Own Version Of “Bond… James Bond”

Reacher has many gimmicks and mannerisms that are unique to the character. Even some of his quotes, like “Details matter,” have become synonymous with his characterization. In Lee Child’s books, the line that constantly defines his stoic demeanor is “Reacher said nothing.” However, a closer look at how he constantly tells his name to people seems reminiscent of James Bond’s iconic, “Bond…James Bond.“

Since season 1, every time a character has asked Reacher his name, he has said, “Just…Reacher.” Even in the flashback scenes, his mother only refers to him as a Reacher instead of using his first name, Jack. Reacher season 4 continues this trend where the Alan Ritchson character affirms he is “just Reacher” every time someone from the law enforcement asks his name.

Alan Ritchson’s cold and matter-of-fact delivery of the line reminds one of how James Bond effortlessly introduces himself with his iconic name.

When it comes to Reacher’s lifestyle choices and investigation style, he is significantly different from James Bond’s sleek, high-society MI6 glamour. However, both characters share a lot of common ground when it comes to living in isolation and not establishing any permanent ties. They also have elite military and intelligence roots and have strong moral codes.

In the past, both Bond and Reacher have been given standalone episodic stories where they encounter new allies, villains, and love interests. Considering the many parallels between the two characters and the similar delivery of their introductory lines, Reacher does qualify as the closest American iteration of James Bond in modern television.

Is Reacher Really The American Equivalent Of James Bond?

Since Jack Reacher’s stories are otherwise significantly different from Bond’s in more ways than one, calling him a Bond rip-off would be unfair. He has more in common with Sherlock Holmes than Bond. Lee Child even drew inspiration from the Arthur Conac Doyle character when he first penned the Jack Reacher books.

However, the many undeniable parallels between James Bond and Jack Reacher and their delivery of their names qualifies the Alan Rithcson character as the “American Bond.“

He is seemingly more invincible than Bond and rarely relies on gadgets or elaborate technology to get himself out of tough situations. Unlike Bond, he also has little to no interest in maintaining a sophisticated lifestyle and usually just travels with a foldable toothbrush. However, both James Bond and Reacher live their lives on their own terms and never allow societal norms to tie them down.

Time and again, Bond and Reacher also realize the cost of living like lone wolves, and, yet, they continue to embrace their solitary lifestyles. Considering these parallels, maybe even Reacher should eventually get the big-screen treatment like the Bond franchise.
