Recasting Stargate SG-1 If It Happened Today

It looks like we are further away from getting a Stargate SG-1 reboot than ever before, but that doesn’t mean we can’t dream. This classic sci-fi series originally ran from 1997 to 2007, and it maintains its cult following even today. There have been several spinoffs and prequels, but a reboot has yet to be seriously considered. It might have become an option had Amazon moved forward with its planned Stargate sequel from Martin Gero, but the project’s cancellation throws any idea of a franchise revival out the window.

Still, in this day and age, nothing is impossible. Ever since it was announced that the new Stargate series was dead, dedicated fans have taken to the internet to express their displeasure. It might not be time yet, but the passion around this sci-fi franchise suggests that a revival or reboot is inevitable. It could be five, ten, or twenty years, but a little patience (and persistence) should guarantee us results. So, we might as well start planning now—who could effectively take over the mantle of Stargate SG-1‘s original cast?

Colonel Jack O’Neil – Sam Worthington

Kurt Russell originally played Colonel Jack O’Neil in the Stargate movie before being recast in the longer-running Stargate SG-1. For that series, Richard Dean Anderson, previously known for MacGyver, took on the role and made Jack what we know him as today. Anderson gave the character a rough, sarcastic sort of charm, but as Stargate SG-1 went on, we saw a surprising amount of vulnerability there. If the role were being recast today, it’s important that whoever steps in captures that same wild-card-with-a-soft-side air.

There’s no doubt that Australian actor Sam Worthington could pull this off without a hitch. Known for playing Jake Sully in James Cameron’s Avatar movies and Marcus Wright in Terminator Salvation, Worthington is a natural fit within the action sci-fi landscape. Playing Jack in a modern Stargate would draw significantly from Worthington’s Avatar role, since both characters are strong military men who hide their vulnerability behind a mask of comedy or indifference. Then there is the fact that Worthington even looks a bit like Anderson, so it would be an easy transition.

Captain Samantha Carter – Yvonne Strahovski

It’s harder to imagine anyone else playing Captain Samantha Carter than Amanda Tapping, since she is among the characters that debuted in Stargate SG-1 and therefore didn’t have to be recast from the movie. Tapping made Sam cheeky, confident, and beautifully optimistic, not to mention strikingly intelligent and empathetic. Her chemistry with Anderson was another asset in SG-1, since this pair had a clear spark that audiences fell in love with from the very beginning.

Like Jack, Samantha Carter is defined by her mix of toughness and vulnerability, though hers is far more balanced and personally accepted. It therefore makes sense that Tapping’s role would be taken over by actor Yvonne Strzechowski, who has played a handful of very similar characters. The most comparable of Strzechowski’s roles would likely be Chuck‘s CIA agent Sarah Walker. Even Strzechowski’s history playing Serena Joy Waterford in The Handmaid’s Tale could come in handy, since no one gets temporarily turned evil quite as much as Sam Carter.

Dr. Daniel Jackson – Andrew Garfield

It was an easy transition between the Stargate movie’s James Spader and Stargate SG-1‘s Michael Shanks. The character of Dr. Daniel Jackson is meant to be bookish and unintentionally charming—contrasting with Jack O’Neil’s easy charisma with a hesitant sort of genius. Of course, Daniel is also marked by his intense determination to protect those who can’t protect themselves, even if it means standing against a god with nothing but knowledge of several dozen languages.

There’s no doubt at all that Andrew Garfield pulls off bookishly charming, as he is among the three primary actors who have played Spider-Man in the MCU. In this and many other roles, Garfield demonstrates an awkward uncertainty and lack of confidence, which is often contrasted by above-average intelligence and ability. It’s easy enough to imagine this actor in the succession from Spader to Shanks—just another lovable nerd that would surely sacrifice it all to save the planet (and many others).

Teal’c – Mike Colter

Unlike many other original Stargate SG-1 actors, Christopher Judge is still rather active in the entertainment industry. He recently appeared at SDCC 2026 as part of the God of War panel, discussing his work in the upcoming God of War: Laufey. While this is voice work, it’s still fairly reasonable to hope that Judge could return to once again play Teal’c if a Stargate SG-1 reboot were ever ordered. This character’s age isn’t important, and it’s hard to imagine another actor who can pull off Judge’s hulking, deadpan roughness in quite the same way.

Still, if Judge were unavailable, Mike Colter might just be the next best option. This is another actor who is no stranger to the sci-fi action genre, having played Luke Cage in a handful of MCU titles including Jessica Jones and The Defenders. Colter is known for his deep, resonant voice, and his six-foot-three height doesn’t hurt either. If this actor can effectively wipe away displays of all emotion (but in the most comical or even heartwarming way), he would be a shoo-in for any future Stargate projects that would bring Teal’c back into the mix.

Lieutenant General George S. Hammond – James Spader

Don S. Davis played the often exasperated Lieutenant General George S. Hammond in Stargate SG-1 after proving himself in similarly militaristic roles in Twin Peaks and The X-Files. While it was often Hammond’s job to reel in wild cards like Jack O’Neil, Davis always managed to keep this character likable and trustworthy. He trusted SG-1 and was a real team player, even if that meant choosing the right moments to say no or place the fate of the world in his subordinates’ hands.

Unfortunately, Davis passed away in 2008, and this makes it even more important that any potential Stargate SG-1 reboot choose a replacement extremely carefully. Who better than Stargate alum James Spader? This actor played Daniel Jackson in the original 1994 movie and has continued to have a memorable career in the three decades since. Spader is known for his thoughtful intensity and is the sort of actor who can handle a heavy weight on his character’s shoulders. His stepping in to play SG-1’s Lieutenant General would be not only nostalgic, but perfectly appropriate.
