Red Dead Redemption Just Got The Upgrade We’ve Waited Years For

[

Though the sequel often gets a lot of the attention these days, it’s important that we don’t forget just how groundbreaking the first Red Dead Redemption was. Tracking the story of John Marston after the events of the second game, its tragic narrative, addictive gameplay, and complete open-world really were better than just about anything else that was around at the time.

That said, if you return to it today, it has certainly started to show its age from a visual perspective, and it’s nowhere near the quality that we eventually got from the sequel in that department. Happily, that’s not something you necessarily have to do if you’re planning another playthrough, as dedicated fans are working together to do something about it.

RDR1 Reality Mod

Over on Nexus Mods, you should be able to find the download page for Reality Redemption, a mod that’s returning in a big way after some time in development limbo. It’s a hugely ambitious overhaul project that aims to improve anything from the overall visuals to what it feels like to play on a minute-to-minute basis.

In sharing a little about the thinking behind the mod, the developer posted the following as part of the official description:

“Red Dead Redemption is amongst one of the best Western titles ever created, next to its successor and sequel. However due to this game’s age, various gameplay and visual elements feel outdated and not up to today’s gaming standards, Reality Redemption aims to improve the visual fidelity of this game with better textures, models, and weather cycles, fixing continuity errors, as well as improving its gameplay elements for a more fluid and realistic experience.”

The list of changes made by the mod is extensive, with improvements to more than 300 prop textures, as well as character and vehicle textures, all sorts of foliage, vegetation, and lighting and volumetric clouds. The game looks a lot better as a result, and it’s significantly less jarring to return to if you get the hankering after playing Red Dead Redemption 2 to death.

Rockstar Games

The future of the Red Dead Redemption franchise as a whole is much more up in the air than the community would feel comfortable with. The two-part narrative that Rockstar planned out has been concluded, but it feels like commercial madness to abandon such a recognizable and successful IP entirely. The focus will understandably be on GTA VI for a while, but there’s every hope that we’ll one day be explore a new game in the Old West.
