Road House Meets Never Back Down In Netflix’s Bloodhounds Season 2

Netflix‘s returning 7-part action thriller seems to be the perfect combination of some of the best elements from Never Back Down and Road House. While the show in question etches its own identity and brings something new to the action genre in more ways than one, fans of both the Road House and Never Back Down franchises will love everything from its fight sequences to its overpowered characters.

More often than not, new additions to the action genre are purely driven by spectacle. In this day and age, the use of heavy CGI and VFX has become so common in high-octane action scenes that it is hard not to miss the raw and gritty fight sequences from classic action movies like Road House and Never Back Down. Fortunately, Netflix’s Bloodhounds delivers exactly what action fans crave in season 2.

Marking Woo Do-hwan and Lee Sang-yi’s return as Kim Geon-woo and Hong Woo-jin, respectively, the action K-drama on Netflix is packed with one gripping action scene after another. In its seven-episode runtime, the show not only features white-knuckling showdowns but also unfolds as a thrilling crime drama.

Bloodhounds Season 2 Is A Gritty Combination Of Road House & Never Back Down

Although Netflix’s Bloodhounds unfolds in modern-day Seoul, it is driven by the same one-man-army justice that defined action movies of the 1980s. Just like Road House, it focuses on an overpowered protagonist, Geon-woo, who appears soft-spoken and polite on the outside. Like Road House‘s Dalton, he understands the consequences of getting involved in brawls but does not shy away from unleashing his fury on bad guys.

Similar to Dalton and Wade, Geon-woo and his best friend, Woo-jin, get embroiled with a bunch of dangerous criminals. To protect their loved ones, they take it upon themselves to serve justice to criminals and clean up the underworld using their professional fighting experience.

Even in the stakes in Bloodhounds initially revolve around money before becoming about protecting a community or one’s family from danger. In season 1, the Netflix K-drama unfolds quite a few showdowns in the boxing ring. However, like Never Back Down, it furthers drifts into the underground fighting tournament domain in season 2, walking through brutal, no-holds-barred fight sequences.

Almost every fight sequence in Bloodhounds season 2 is better than the last as the show combines technical boxing with over-the-top elements. Some characters in the show’s season 2 even combine fighting styles and brutally beat down their opponents, reminding one of movies like Bloodsport.

Bloodhounds season 2 also has an incredible, overpowered villain played by Rain of the Ninja Assassin fame. Like the antagonist from the first Never Back Down movie, Rain’s character pushes Geon-woo to his limits and threatens to harm his loved ones to make him fight in an underground fight-to-death.

With so many shared aspects from Road House and Never Back Down in Bloodhounds season 2, it is one Netflix series no action fan should miss out on.

Bloodhounds season 1 gave the action K-drama a solid start, but it lost a little momentum towards the end. Fortunately, season 2 is not the same and keeps getting better with each episode. In terms of action, Bloodhounds season 2 leaves no stone unturned and even matches some of the best high-budget Hollywood movies.

In its ending moments, Bloodhounds season 2 also features a post-credits cliffhanger that sets the stage for another season. Since the show has more stories to explore and many more action set pieces to display, it deserves to return for another season.

While only time will tell whether Netflix will renew it, Bloodhounds season 2 has seemingly performed really well on the streaming service. Hopefully, its commercial numbers will keep rising and prompt Netflix to soon renew it for season 3. While waiting for its return, viewers can rewatch its action scenes or even check out the Road House and Never Back Down movies again.
