Robert Eggers’ Werwulf Breaks Two Huge Horror Rules For The Right Reasons

[

Robert Eggers‘ next horror movie breaks some major rules followed by most other films in the same subgenre – and it seems like the best move possible for the upcoming release. While Robert Eggers has only directed four major movies thus far, every single one of them has managed to resonate with audiences, starting with 2015’s The Witch, which is held up as a prime example of the potential of historical horror to this day – though 2019’s The Lighthouse, 2022’s The Northman, and 2024’s Nosferatu all managed to be major movie talking points too.

Trajectory in mind, the impending arrival of 2026’s Werwulf is a point of major excitement for many moviegoers, especially those with a penchant for horror. Given Robert Eggers’ movies have historically provided distinctive and unique renditions of every supernatural story and trend he’s approached, the creator taking on a werewolf story is naturally a promising prospect, particularly in the wake of Nosferatu‘s success.

Interestingly, though, Robert Eggers has also explained that Werwulf won’t simply be following all the trends and traditions established over the years when it comes to werewolves and how their stories are handled, meaning the film is set to make its own path. Indeed, Werwulf specifically avoiding some major werewolf rules that are held to by many similar stories makes the movie seem all the more unique.

In an interview with Esquire, Werwulf director Robert Eggers delved into his intentions with the upcoming historical horror film, revealing that the way the film delves into the concept of werewolves avoids many of the usual rules around them that are followed in similar releases.

Eggers explained that “all the clichés of being bitten by a werewolf and silver bullets and a lot of the stuff that has become almost campy doesn’t exist in the mythology of this movie“, meaning that Werwulf will be quite different to the vast majority of werewolf horror movies, and that its titular beast or beasts will seemingly be far more dangerous, since audiences can’t rely on these old rules to have a sense of what might happen in the film the same.

Given Robert Eggers’ previous and well-received Nosferatu played with vampire mythos and its “rules” in a similar way, Werwulf being set to toy with the idea of lycanthropy in this sense seems a promising early detail to learn about the film – and makes Werwulf‘s trailer all the more interesting in terms of getting a sense of what direction the movie will take with its supernatural creatures.

Why Werwulf Not Using The Werewolf Horror Movie Rules Is The Right Call

Much of the most effective way to generate horror is to build tension and uncertainty into a story, and leave the audience unsure if what awful things they believe might happen are actually set to become reality. Absconding with the rules that most werewolf stories hold to works in this sense, since viewers either go into the movie knowing things are different here, or are surprised to learn this through the course of the story itself.

In a similar vein, Werwulf being able to carve out its own distinctive take on lycanthropy is sure to give the movie a distinctive nature, allowing it to set itself apart from other werewolf films all the easier, and meaning its story is sure to not feel anything like a rehash of its predecessors in the horror subgenre.

As such, the decision to avoid some of the most long-followed rules of werewolf movies seems like the perfect move for Werwulf, and means there’s even more reason to see it in cinemas in order to learn exactly what Robert Eggers‘ werewolves are like, and whether they buck or follow any other traditions in its story.
