Robin Williams Kids Revive Instagram Account to Fight AI Abuse

[

Inactive since Robin Williams’ death in 2014, the actor-comedian’s children revived his Instagram account Monday to combat what his daughter Zelda Williams calls “rampant AI abuse of his voice and likeness” on the social media platform.

“As we recognize what would be our Dad’s 75th year, we’re grateful to see new generations discovering his work while longtime fans continue to celebrate the joy he brought into their lives,” siblings Zak, Zelda and Cody Williams said in the post. “As technology evolves, we want this to be a safe, trusted place where the stories, photos, videos, and memories shared reflect his legacy with authenticity, warmth, and care.”

“This is our way of sharing his unique talent and humor with the world, including the moments that made us and so many of you laugh, as we remember our Dad’s extraordinary life and work. He continues to inspire us and delight people all over the world.”

Zelda Williams commented further on the decision in an Instagram story on her own account.

“I’m sorry if anyone found Dad’s old page posting again to be triggering. Believe me, I know it’s a little strange,” Williams posted. “Making that space into one where people can find authentic clips and photos of him is one of the best ways we’ve now found to fight back against rampant AI abuse of his voice and likeness on here.”

Williams has long made her disdain for AI-generated content of her father known, asking fans in October 2025 to “stop sending me AI videos of Dad.”

“Stop believing I wanna see it or that I’ll understand, I don’t and I won’t. If you’re just trying to troll me, I’ve seen way worse, I’ll restrict and move on,” the actress-director added at the time. “But please, if you’ve got any decency, just stop doing this to him and to me, to everyone even, full stop. It’s dumb, it’s a waste of time and energy, and believe me, it’s not what he’d want.”

Williams previously slammed the “disturbing” use of AI to recreate her father’s voice, bashing such recreations as, “at their very best, a poor facsimile of greater people, but at their worst, a horrendous Frankensteinian monster, cobbled together from the worst bits of everything this industry is, instead of what it should stand for.”

Williams’ revulsion at AI recreations of her dad’s voice is not shared by Matthew Lawrence, who played Robin Williams’ son in Mrs. Doubtfire. Lawrence said last year that he would “love” for AI to recreate the actor’s “iconic” voice.

“I would love — now, obviously, with the respect and with the OK from his family — but I would love to do something really special with his voice,” Lawrence told Deadline in July 2025, “because I know for a generation, that voice is just so iconic.”
