Ryan Gosling’s Star Wars Movie Is Even More Exciting After This Week’s Marvel Reveal

Marvel Studios is set to enter the beginning of the end of their current chapter of storytelling with the release of Avengers: Doomsday. The Marvel Cinematic Universe looks set to be forever altered by the events of that film and its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars. After that, the MCU will be in a brand-new era. But something similar can be said for Star Wars too, which will soon deliver Star Wars: Starfighter.

What the MCU will look like after Secret Wars was teased at San Diego Comic Con last weekend. Several projects were discussed, one of which is Ghost Rider, a new film from director Shawn Levy and star Ryan Gosling.

Levy and Gosling have worked together before, including on another huge Disney franchise project. The duo teamed up for Star Wars: Starfighter, the latest film set in a galaxy far, far away. Much like Ghost Rider, Starfighter will usher in a new era of Star Wars, as the film is set five years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker.

That Disney are already pairing Shawn Levy and Ryan Gosling together once again highlights their confidence in the creative partnership, which is promising news for Star Wars fans hoping for the franchise to make a grand return to movie theaters with Starfighter.

Ryan Gosling And Shawn Levy Teaming Up Again Is A Great Sign For Star Wars: Starfighter

Disney and Lucasfilm have a lot riding on Star Wars: Starfighter. It’s only the second Star Wars film to release this decade, and follows up The Mandalorian and Grogu, which had mixed results reception-wise and at the box office. Those mixed results only increased the pressure on Starfighter to deliver a Star Wars story that is worthy of the big screen.

Naturally, then, fans have long since held great interest in the project, and have looked for signs that Starfighter is on the right path. Filming went by smoothly, which hasn’t always been the case for Star Wars movies under Disney, but the jury is still out on whether Starfighter will be the success that the studio hopes it to be.

However, there are plenty of signs that Disney are confident in Starfighter, none more so than the fact that they are already bringing director Shawn Levy and star Ryan Gosling back together once again. It shows that they are satisfied with the final product that the duo created the first time around, so much so that they are bringing them together once again for such a huge film as Ghost Rider.

The return of Shawn Levy is particularly telling. Ryan Gosling himself is one of the biggest movie stars in the industry, whereas Shawn Levy is less well-known and more of a rising name for mainstream audiences. He does, though, have a great deal of recent success under his belt, most notably 2016’s Arrival, which secured an Oscar nomination for Best Picture. What’s more, he also helmed Deadpool and Wolverine, Free Guy, and The Adam Project.

Deadpool and Wolverine had the benefit of falling under the umbrella of the MCU, not to mention the fact that it featured the highly anticipated pairing of Ryan Reynolds’ and Hugh Jackman’s respective X-Men characters. Free Guy and The Adam Project, on the other hand, didn’t have the same advantages, but found success at the box office and on streaming without widespread name recognition. All things considered, Disney has good reasons to be confident in Levy’s ability to put together an entertaining science fiction film that will fill theaters.

Kevin Feige Speaks Highly Of Starfighter

While at San Diego Comic Con, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige referenced Starfighter while introducing the new Ghost Rider project.

“It’s awesome. I didn’t need to see that movie to know those two are awesome. But I did watch it as a Star Wars fan, and it’s awesome.”

Feige has made his Star Wars fandom clear on many occasions before, and it’s clear that the franchise has had a huge impact on the MCU. Feige typically has a good sense for which projects will be successful, so the fact that he’s leaning on Starfighter for the future of the MCU is a great sign for the new Star Wars movie.

Star Wars: Starfighter releases in theaters on May 28, 2027.
