We’re only three episodes into School Spirits season 3 on Paramount+ and not only are they exactly what you need to stream this weekend, but I already don’t know if I’m coming or going.
While Maddie (Peyton List) is now back in her regular body, best friend Simon (Kristian Ventura) has crossed over to the afterlife.
‘Watch with friends, get some blankets and probably some more tissues’
“I would say if you’re on season 3, episode 3, get more blankets and possibly more tissues,” Ventura tells me as advice for how to handle upcoming twists and turns.
“It gets worse. Episodes four, five and six are a different show. It’s so unfamiliar. Not even just terrifying, the scenes are different. For Simon to be in scenes and action sequences with the ghosts, it’s so unknown. But my advice is to watch with friends.”
In all honesty, I’m still not completely sure how I feel about Simon and Maddie effectively swapping places. Is it a genius move, or does it feel like a cop-out to keep the story peddling forward into more seasons? For Ventura, the answer is obvious.
“I think that it’s incredibly rewarding. Even just auditioning for the show, I never thought I would be in a scene with someone like Mr. Martin (Josh Zuckerman) and now I’ve had so many times where I’m just looking at him in the eye and it does not feel real.
“I remember one of the showrunners came running over. He was sprinting across set. He goes, ‘I just wrote a scene for you and Charley (Nick Pugliese)’. And I was like, ‘wow, this is a big deal to the writers’. They love putting these two people who would never see each other in the same room. So I think it was a great decision.”
If I’m this flummoxed over what we’ve already seen, I’ve got no idea how I’m going to get through the next three episodes. When it comes to what’s actually about to be thrown our way, your guess is as good as mine.
