Sequel To Danny Trejo Boxing Film ‘Counterpunch’ In The Works

[

EXCLUSIVE: A sequel to the Danny Trejo-starring 2013 boxing film Counterpunch is in the works.

Counterpunch 2 will see the return of co-writer, producer and star Alvaro Orlando under his production banner Unbreakable Studios. Alexis Knapp (Pitch Perfect franchise) is attached to co-star after recently acting with Orlando in Golden State Film Festival premiere The Pick Up Artist, which Orlando also directed and wrote.

The original, which also starred Steven Bauer, centered on a fighter battling mental health challenges while chasing a second chance at a professional career in California. The film was picked up by Lionsgate and released through its Grindstone label.

No indication at this stage that Trejo or Lionsgate are back for the sequel, but casting and finance talks are underway.

The sequel is said to “explore themes of resilience, mental health, and compassion through a more socially driven narrative. Counterpunch 2 deepens Orlando’s emotional stakes, positioning boxing as a metaphor not only for survival, but for purpose.”

Counterpunch 2 is about what we fight for,” said Orlando. “It’s about the silent battles so many
people face, and the strength it takes to keep going when no one is watching. At the same time,
it’s about compassion and how we show up for ourselves and for those who cannot fight for
themselves.”
