The following contains spoilers for Disclosure DayDisclosure Day‘s ending specifically leaves things open to interpretation, raising some big questions for the audience to debate among themselves. Steven Spielberg’s latest sci-fi film focuses on efforts by a group of whistleblowers to help two people empowered by aliens finally expose the conspiracy that’s been keeping the extraterrestrials a secret for decades.
Most of the film is focused on Margaret and Daniel as they reconnect with their roles in “Disclosure Day,” eventually playing key roles in getting the information broadcast to the whole world. The ending of Disclosure Day sees the entire plan come to a grinding halt to process the information. However, the message from the alien isn’t revealed to the audience.
This invites the audience to ponder the fate of the world after this truth is exposed. Even beyond the plotlines that were set up in the film regarding the fate of religion and the chances of global conflict breaking out, there are some big questions about how the world will be different in the aftermath of Disclosure Day.
Are Aliens Coming To Earth After Disclosure Day’s Ending?
The truth about aliens being revealed to the world leaves the future of humanity very much in question, going forward, with the purposefully ambiguous ending raising questions about how aliens will change the world. In Disclosure Day‘s ending, it’s revealed that at least one alien is still alive on Earth.
It’s easy to assume that others have been using their assumed forms as animals to activate Margaret’s empathetic powers. This proves to be the key to setting Disclosure Day into overdrive, suggesting that the aliens are still very aware of what is happening on Earth and the efforts to finally expose them.
This raises questions about whether the aliens will now come out into the open or will leave humanity due to their mistreatment. It could become a potential alliance, something Hugo seems to believe will be the result of the alien’s deep empathy. The final message of the alien isn’t revealed, but it could reshape how humanity sees itself in the world.
What Happens To World War III After Disclosure Day?
The ending of Disclosure Day leaves things open to interpretation, with the exact message from the aliens and the fallout on the world at large left to the imagination. The biggest question has to do with the massive war that had been brewing in the background of the film. Tensions are already spilling over into active conflict.
The implication is that World War III has become an apparent inevitability, only for the conflict to come to a halt when the existence of aliens is confirmed by Disclosure Day. Hugo argued that the message of empathy that the aliens were trying to bring to humanity was going to be the key to halting the conflict and saving humanity.
There’s a chance that the lingering conflicts that had set the world on that path may still become active, especially if governments or militaries decide to use the likely chaos of this new public information to try and consolidate power. While WWIII might have been stopped in the short term, there’s still a chance that the conflict could reignite.
The American Government And Military Are In Real Trouble After Disclosure Day
One thing that does seem like a certainty, though, is that the reputation of the United States government and military will be devastated by the revelations of the conspiracy. It’s unlikely that any other nation will accept the argument that they were kept in the dark for their own good, severely damaging their connections to the country.
Although elected officials can argue that they didn’t know about the aliens — it’s mentioned that politicians were eventually kept out of the loop out of fears that once out of office, they could reveal the truth — it will be of little comfort that a decade-old conspiracy was happening beneath the notice of the executive, congressional, and judicial branches.
The military doesn’t get that luxury, potentially severing any ties of trust between the military and their allies around the world. Given the clear instability of the world before Disclosure Day, allies breaking away from the US could leave the country open for rebuttal by antagonistic regimes.
Companies like Wardex and people like Noah Scanlon are especially at risk of facing major consequences for their role in keeping the conspiracy going. Especially if the government and military are looking for scapegoats, things don’t bode well for the fates of Noah or his allies.
Religion Is Going To Be Asked Some Hard Questions After Disclosure Day
One of the more intriguing character arcs of Disclosure Day has to do with Jane. Daniel’s girlfriend is a devout young woman, having briefly been a nun before leaving the church after her faith in humanity was broken. Jane offers the idea that many religious people won’t be able to deal with the theological ramifications of the existence of aliens.
That’s an understandable fear to have, given the kind of interpretations of religion that Jane has at first. There’s a good chance that many fundamentalists would respond negatively to the news, potentially causing more upheaval in an already disrupted world. However, the film also posits that open-minded people of faith (like Sister Maura) could be key in the future.
They could help make it clear that the existence of aliens does not invalidate the existence of God. Disclosure Day suggests that this would work, with Jane as a clear example of someone whose doubts about revealing the truth eventually give way to her playing a key role in ensuring Disclosure Day still happens.
The Mystery Is The Point Of Disclosure Day
All of these questions are left open-ended for a reason. It allows the alien’s message to be shaped by each individual viewer, although Spielberg’s perspective seems to be that the aliens do have a sense of empathy for humanity despite their mistreatment on Earth. However, it’s important that the audience doesn’t find out about the full extent of the message once the film comes to a conclusion.
So much of Disclosure Day is left open to interpretation that this ending shouldn’t come as a surprise. This is part of the consistent themes throughout the movie about the importance of taking a leap of faith on one another — whether that be on yourself, in others, and in humanity as a whole — is the key to saving the world.
As a work of art, it’s meant to inspire discussion and retrospection, asking questions and then letting the audience ponder them. In that regard, the ambiguous ending makes sense, if a little frustrating, because nothing else is disclosed. Disclosure Day may have some very big questions left unanswered, but it’s very much by design.
