Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Spider-Man: Brand New Dayis a massive movie. It’s the next step forward for Tom Holland‘s Peter Parker as he deals with young adult life and the crushing loneliness that follows his decision at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home. It also features a narrative that includes the Punisher (Jon Bernthal), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and even teases the introduction of the X-Men to the Marvel Cinematic Universe by introducing Jean Grey (Sadie Sink). Much like its title character, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is rising above the odds thanks to stellar reviews and what looks to be the biggest box office opening of the year. There’s also the fact that the post credits scene hints that Spidey is coming back to the big screen sooner than expected.
During the post credits, an image of the “Spidey Tracker” — an app that Peter’s former friend Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon) developed to keep track of the web-slinger — is shown, featuring Spidey in New York. It then zooms out…and starts heading into space, before finally landing on a mysterious planet with the words “Location Unknown.” This all but hints that Spidey’s next appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is slated to be in Avengers: Secret Wars, and given the history of that iconic comic book storyline, it means that the MCU could see one of Spider-Man’s biggest villains coming to life.
Spider-Man’s Appearance in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ Could Lead to Venom

The originalSecret Warsmaxiseries by Jim Shooter, Mike Zeck and Bob Layton was a game changer for Marvel Comics and the realm of comics in general, as it introduced the idea of the “event” comic that still shapes Marvel and DC Comics’ publishing to this day. It also sowed the seeds for one of Spider-Man’s deadliest foes, as the web-slinger gained a new black costume during the events of Secret Wars. After returning to Earth, Spidey learned that his new costume was an alien symbiote and sought to bond with him by any means necessary, leading him to tear it off in a church when he discovered its weakness to sound. In the same church was disgraced reporter Eddie Brock, who blamed Spider-Man for ruining his life; the symbiote eventually bonds with Brock and forms the monstrous Venom.
While Avengers: Secret Wars is looking to take more inspiration from the 2015 Secret Wars miniseries by Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic, it wouldn’t be a stretch to imagine Peter Parker getting the black symbiote in the movie. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo previouslysaid that Secret Wars is the Marvel storyline they wanted to bring to the big screen, and Tom Holland recently revealed in an interview that his Spider-Man could have crossed paths with Tom Hardy‘s Venom, as Sony wanted their slate of Spider-Man-less films to interact with the MCU:
“They were building this universe and they had these plans to merge the worlds at some point, and I think that they just never found the right time to do so. I think it was on the cards, and there were never any battles of ‘We want you to be in this movie’ and ‘I don’t want to be in this movie’. That never happened.”

There’s Another Spider-Man Character That ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ Could Bring Into the MCU
If Avengers: Secret Wars is bold enough to give Peter Parker the Venom symbiote, it could also fulfill Tom Holland’s plans for the character and set the stage for Miles Morales to become the next Spider-Man. Miles originally became Spider-Man to carry on the legacy of his world’s Peter Parker, who perished in battle against the Sinister Six; he also was a major part of the 2015 Secret Wars and eventually found himself living on Earth-616, where the main Marvel universe is. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige previously said that he’s waiting for the Spider-Verse trilogy to conclude before bringing Miles into the MCU, and the time is coming as Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Versewill make its debut before Avengers: Secret Wars.
A large part of what makes Tom Holland’s performance as Spider-Man so incredible is seeing how he lets Peter Parker grow as a character. Getting the symbiote suit is another step in that growth, and allows future films to put a new spin on iconic villains like Venom.
