Star Wars’ New Jedi Show Is Officially Streaming On Disney+

The newest Star Wars show is highlighting a new spinoff of the Jedi Order, and it’s officially streaming on Disney+. Star Wars, as a whole, is moving away from its television efforts. There are only two remaining upcoming Star Wars shows, and Ahsoka season 2 is the franchise’s only live-action series in development. Instead, the franchise’s future has returned to the movie theater through upcoming Star Wars movies like Star Wars: Starfighter.

While the future of Star Wars is primarily going to take place on the big screen, the franchise’s television efforts aren’t done completely yet. It has only been three months since the last Star Wars show, Maul – Shadow Lord, ended on May 4, and Ahsoka season 2 is just a few months away from its early 2027 release window. Now, as if to bridge the gap between them, Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi is available to stream on Disney+.

The Ninth Jedi, a standalone spinoff of the animated series Star Wars: Visions, premiered with all eight episodes in the limited series today, August 5, on Disney+. Currently, the show is described as a limited series, meaning viewers can see the entirety of the show’s story right now. Since The Ninth Jedi is a spinoff series, however, you will have to watch Visions season 1, episode 5, and season 3, episode 3 first to experience the start of Lah Kara’s journey.

What To Expect From Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi

Star Wars: Visions and, by extension, The Ninth Jedi, aren’t considered part of Star Wars canon, so it’s worth explaining how the Legends series deviates from established lore. The Ninth Jedi follows Lah Kara, a young woman living in an alternate version of the galaxy far, far away where the Jedi are all but extinct. Kara’s father, Lah Zhima, is one of the last people alive who can forge new lightsabers, though these lightsabers display color based on the wielder’s standing in the Force; red for dark side users, and blue or green for Jedi.

After Lah Zhima is captured by bounty hunters, Kara joins up with a group of “masterless” Jedi to find her father and reestablish the Jedi Order. In the standalone series, Kara and her Jedi friends — Margrave Juro, Ethan, and Homen — try to rally the galaxy against General Nawaam, a mysterious helmeted warlord, and Gennoh, dubbed “the last Sith,” who promise to bring order to the galaxy by force. Nawaam, however, holds a secret: his blue lightsaber, indicating he’s aligned with the light side of the Force.

There will almost certainly be surprises in store for Lah Kara and her friends as they try to rescue her father and rebuild the Jedi Order. The trailer for The Ninth Jedi already hinted that Nawaam may get his hands on a devastating super weapon made of kyber crystals, that Kara may be tempted by the dark side of the Force, and that not everything is as simple as it seems. In short, The Ninth Jedi looks like a thrilling Star Wars adventure that will keep audiences glued to the screen.

The Ninth Jedi Could Be The Start Of A New Era For Star Wars

There’s another reason you may want to watch The Ninth Jedi now that it’s available to stream on Disney+: it could change Star Wars as a whole. As previously mentioned, Disney and Lucasfilm are scaling back the franchise’s television efforts in favor of focusing on movies. Ahsoka season 2 is the last ongoing live-action series, and Maul – Shadow Lord is the only canon animated series currently in development.

The Ninth Jedi, however, could usher in a new age of Star Wars television. If it’s a hit, Disney and Lucasfilm may decide to give other standout episodes from Star Wars: Visions a shot at becoming standalone limited series. Notable Visions episodes, like The Duel and The Village Bride, are already ripe for continuation and have plenty of fans who want to learn more about their worlds.

While Star Wars canon may mostly be done with television, Star Wars Legends could just be getting started. Since Visions and its potential spinoffs aren’t canon, there isn’t much risk that they would “dilute” the Star Wars brand. There’s also endless possibility for new Legends stories, as they aren’t constrained by the established timeline of events. Canon Star Wars can focus on movies like Starfighter, while Star Wars Legends can branch out into unique and imaginative new shows like The Ninth Jedi.
