Star Wars’ New Series Pays Off The Franchise’s Best Retcon

[

The best retcon the Star Wars franchise ever made will finally be paid off in just a few days time. Given the nature of the Star Wars timeline, retcons are commonplace in the franchise. The viewing guide for the Star Wars movies changes constantly; release order would see someone watch George Lucas’ original trilogy, then the prequel trilogy, then the sequels.

However, chronologically, the prequels come first, then the originals, then the sequels. That is, without mentioning the spin-off movies and countless Star Wars TV shows. Where the shows are concerned, they are scattered all across the timeline, meaning certain things have been retroactively placed into the franchise’s continuity, aka, retconned.

For instance, Obi-Wan Kenobi‘s story included a meeting between Darth Vader and the titular character set between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, which, before the show’s release in 2022, did not exist. Retcons like this will always be a part of Star Wars, often due to TV shows expanding the franchise.

Perhaps the best, wisest retcon of the bunch came over a decade ago and, finally, will be paid off to its fullest potential.

Star Wars Retconning Maul’s Death Was A Great Decision

The retcon in question relates to Darth Maul’s death in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. More specifically, the retcon was George Lucas’ decision to keep Maul alive, despite the character being cut in half by Obi-Wan Kenobi. In season 3 of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, it was revealed that Maul survived this, using his hatred to stay alive long enough to construct metallic spider-like legs before succumbing to madness.

Maul was then found by his brother, Savage Opress, and returned home to Dathomir, where his sanity was restored by Mother Talzin. Maul then went on to play a vital role in The Clone Wars, its sequel, Star Wars Rebels, and several other stories across the vast transmedia franchise.

Without a doubt, retconning Maul’s death was an excellent decision on Lucas’ part. In utilizing the character as a recurring villain in Star Wars’ animated TV shows, Maul became one of the most compelling, well-written antagonists in the entire franchise. Some of the best moments in both shows involve Maul, be it his role in the Siege of Mandalore in The Clone Wars season 7 or his climactic duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars Rebels season 3.

Shadow Lord Will Pay Off Star Wars’ Maul Retcon In Full

Despite all of this proving how great a decision it was to keep Maul alive, Star Wars still hasn’t utilized this to its full potential. Finally, though, in just a few days, this will cease to be the case. On April 6, 2026, Maul – Shadow Lord will release on Disney+. The show will be Maul’s first appearance in the franchise as the central character, rather than his usual role as a supporting antagonist.

Focusing on Maul rebuilding his criminal empire after Palpatine’s victory in Revenge of the Sith, Shadow Lord is expected to bridge the gap between The Clone Wars season 7 and Star Wars Rebels. This will likely include elements planned for the sequel to Solo: A Star Wars Story, which revealed Maul as the secret leader behind the crime syndicate known as Crimson Dawn.

Finally, by showing Maul in all his glory in his own show, the franchise will be capitalizing on the retcon to keep him alive. It has already done so in many ways by using the character expertly, but never like this. Based on how well Maul has been written in the past and how great Star Wars‘ animated shows can be, the franchise’s wisest retcon is being completely realized after over a decade.
