Steam is a bountiful feast of special games across all genres, and Stardew Valley is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to its massive catalog of indie games. A short browsing session usually turns up games that you’ve never heard of before, and it might end up intriguing you more than any AAA first-party game.
Steam is also a treasure trove for anyone who appreciates when certain video game genres bleed into one another that initially seem like they’d clash, but instead make for a sensational peanut butter and chocolate pairing. One such pairing marries the psychological horror and cozy farming sim genres, and the result could best be described as a sinister successor to Stardew Valley that looms like a sleep paralysis demon and toys with sanity like the Amnesia series.
Per its Steam store page, Petunia’s Purgatory is a “creepy-cute idle farming game” from Dead Possum Games, an indie husband-and-wife team. What’s most unique about Petunia’s Purgatory, though, is that it “lives at the bottom of your screen” as a desktop application overlay.
Petunia’s Purgatory isn’t a typical idle PC game, either. If players neglect their duties in this adorable pixel-art farming sim, much less “something lurking in the barn,” the protagonist character, Petunia, risks losing her sanity, which will fascinatingly be visually represented on players’ desktop screens via hallucinations. Depending on how intrusive these hallucinations are, it could be thrilling to have hallucinations appear when players least expect them.
Essentially, the gameplay loop sees players planting and growing unnatural crops to feed to the Elder God. Petunia’s Purgatory leans wholly into this fantastical, supernatural element by also featuring “cute but creepy helpers” that players can summon to “till, harvest, and haul.” It doesn’t appear to be pulling many punches regarding how macabre it might become, either, as players are required to slaughter “mutated animals” for their blood.
Plus, planting and decorating will uplift Petunia’s sanity, which could make for the perfect balance in gameplay. As a game that is always present in idle gameplay on players’ screens, it’s great that players can also customize just how much of it appears on the screen at any given time.
Overall, Petunia’s Purgatory seems like a fascinating farming sim game to add to players’ sweeping collections on Steam, boasting a satisfyingly eerie and immersive gimmick. Eager fans don’t need to wait until next week for it to launch, either, as there is currently a free demo available on Steam for this unique alternative to Stardew Valley.
Petunia’s Purgatory is scheduled to be released for PC on July 16, 2026.
