Heading into the weekend, there are millions of players on the lookout for the game that they’re going to fill it with. For PC players, that usually means popping over to Steam and seeing what’s on the front page, and in fairness, it’s usually populated by some genuinely compelling potential offerings.
Those precious two days off also usually come with games that are being made temporarily free-to-play, allowing you to give it a go without too much in the way of time pressure. Then, if you like what you see, you can commit to the full purchase when Monday rolls around. This weekend was no exception, and there are three more releases that are free-to-play right now, and you’ve got 24 hours to give them a go.
The headline act this time around is undoubtedly Sonic Racing: Crossworlds, an absolutely bonkers racer that really puts Mario Kart under a bunch of pressure. Taking control of the legendary and extensive cast of the titular series, racing takes place across land, sea, and air, with all of the usual boosts and abilities that you’d expect from an arcade racing game of this ilk.
It’s also an extensive release, with 24 courses and 15 CrossWorld courses to choose from, as well as single-player modes, and highly competitive multiplayer options. It’s also 40% off right now, so if you do have a great time (as almost everyone in the Steam reviews has), you can pick it up for less than you usually would.
Up next is No More Room In Hell 2, a very intense 8-player zombie shooter where you have the unenviable task of surviving swarms of the undead on your way to victory. Though it sits on mixed reviews right now, there are some interesting features that would be worth trying out for yourself if you’re a fan of the genre. Equally, the game is in Early Access, so there’s plenty of time for the development team to improve things moving forward.
Lastly is Paradox Interactive’s very solid strategy threequel Victoria 3. Taking control of one of dozens of world nations from 1836-1936, you’ll be doing everything from balancing the economy to dealing with aggressive neighbors, all on arguably the prettiest map the developer has ever made. It’s also a very healthy 70% off if it manages to get its hooks in you.
It’s worth checking back in with Steam just before each weekend to see what’s on offer, because there’s usually two or three ways to fill your weekend without spending any of those pretty pennies. That’s also when most sales go live, with plenty of those offering 80%+ discounts or more.
