Supergirl promises to bring a new kind of superheroine to the DC Universe.
Directed by Craig Gillespie, the film stars Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl, the last daughter of Krypton and the cousin of Superman (David Corenswet). Supergirl also stars Jason Momoa, Eve Ridley, Matthias Schoenaerts, David Krumholtz, and Emily Beecham, among others. Kara was previously portrayed on the big screen in live-action by Helen Slater in 1984’s Supergirl and Sasha Calle in 2024’s The Flash.
Speaking with Screen Rant at CCXP Mexico, Alcock opened up about what makes the DCU’s Supergirl distinct from prior film superheroines. “I think for me, I tackled Kara as her own individual kind of being,” she stated.
“I think she is so different from female superheroes that we’ve seen before,” Alcock concluded. She clarified that Kara “brings a certain rawness and realness” that has yet to be seen in other depictions of the character or in most female superheroes in film. The House of the Dragon star said: “She’s, you know, messy, and she’s kind of cool as hell. She’s cheeky. She’s cool.”
Previously, Alcock discussed the legacy of Supergirl and her various iterations over the years with Screen Rant in 2024. “I think any and all takes on the character are valuable because of what she stands for,” the actress explained. “Supergirl as an entity is iconic for a reason and has been since the ’50s.“
Supergirl first appeared in Action Comics #252 in May 1959.
Per Alcock, “every iteration of [Supergirl] is valuable for young women to see, and hopefully [with] every take on her, someone will see themselves in it.” Similarly, television’s Supergirl, Melissa Benoist, has expressed her support for Alcock taking up the mantle the Girl of Steel.
“Once you’ve donned the glyph, you’re part of a very small club of people that has worn capes,” said Benoist, who played Kara for six seasons as part of the Arrowverse. “So it always feels special when any iteration of the story and the canon comes to life, so I will be there to support.”
Alcock additionally noted that Kara is “not trying to save the world—she’s just trying to save her own.” She concluded: “This film is an excellent reminder that the world can be crumbling around you, but you can be the hero of your own story.”
Supergirl flies into theaters on June 26, 2026.
