The DC Universe is about to resume next month as Kara Zor-El is making her return following Milly Alcock’s 2025 debut in Superman.
In a new interview with Collider, Craig Gillespie, who directed the Supergirl movie for DC Studios, was asked about the process of finishing the 2026 entry, which is in the final stages of post-production. When elaborating on the runtime for Kara’s solo film, the Cruella and I, Tonya filmmaker stated that “It’s around that one, yeah. With credits, close to 1 [hour] 50 [minutes,]” which would make this the shortest DCU film in James Gunn’s superhero franchise.
Gillespie also gave an update about how they are almost done with the final touches, saying, “I feel really great about it. I’m very excited for everybody to see it. [We are in the] final stages getting all the effects done, and we’re doing the mix this week, the final mix. So, we’re basically at the finish line, and I can’t wait for everyone to see it.” However, when asked if he could tease whether or not the Supergirl movie has a post-credits scene, “I can’t tease that, sorry.”
The differences between Supergirl and Superman’s respective runtimes are not too big, though, with the David Corenswet-starring film being 1 hour and 10 minutes, with Alcock’s entry being only 20 minutes shorter. Gillespie’s film, which was written by Ana Nogueira, is an adaptation of Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s eight-issue run, which ran from 2021 to 2022. While there are already a few differences being made to the DCU version, if they are capturing the essence of the book, that is what matters the most.
One of the biggest changes that has been confirmed from Supergirl. Woman of Tomorrow is the addition of Jason Momoa’s Lobo in the Supergirl cast, as the famous bounty hunter was never part of King and Evely’s series. The former Aquaman star is, so far, the only actor from the DCEU’s Justice League cast to be entering the DCU franchise in a new role.
Whether or not Supergirl will remain the shortest film in the DCU’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” remains to be seen, as DC Studios also has Clayface coming out later this year on October 23. At the time of this story’s publication, a runtime has not been revealed yet for the R-rated horror film, which will bring one of Batman’s most famous villains into Gunn’s franchise.
Following 2026, time will tell when Kara will show up next in the DCU, as they have yet to announce further plans for Supergirl beyond her own movie. However, as the Girl of Steel is primed to be one of the big focuses in Gunn’s shared universe, it feels safe to say that audience members will not have to wait too long to see her again after this summer.
Gunn is currently filming Man of Tomorrow, which is slated to open on July 9, 2027, and while Alcock hasn’t been announced as part of the cast, it wouldn’t be shocking if the two Kryptonian cousins end up being reunited next year. Several DCU actors from other projects have already been revealed to be part of the story, including Lanterns’ Aaron Pierre.
Supergirl is scheduled to land in theaters on June 26.
