‘Superman’s Mr. Terrific Spin-Off Series Is Officially Happening

[

While Supergirl may not have achieved the commercial or critical reception Warner Bros was hoping for, one DC Comics project is getting lots of love, love, love. Now, fair play — the project is still in the early stages of development. But now we know the superhero veteran who’ll be penning the pilot for the series.

According to reports, Allan Heinberg will be writing the pilot for the Mr. Terrific series, which will be a solo outing for Edi Gathegi‘s irascible super-genius, who debuted in 2025’s Superman. Heinberg is a longtime TV veteran, with credits on shows like The OC, Grey’s Anatomy, and Sex and the City. He also has a passion for superheroes; he penned the screenplay for 2017’s Wonder Woman, and has had stints writing Wonder Woman and Justice League comic books. Over at DC’s superhero rival, Marvel, Heinberg co-created the Young Avengers with artist Jim Cheung. Recently, he served as an executive producer and writer on Netflix’s adaptation of the seminal supernatural comic The Sandman.

Who Is Mr. Terrific?

The original Mr. Terrific was Terry Sloane, a masked man from the Golden Age of Comic Books in the 1940s; created by Charles Reizenstein and Hal Sharp in 1942’s Sensation Comics #1, he fought criminals with nothing more than his multitude of talents and a keen sense of “fair play.” A reserve member of the Justice Society of America, he was eventually killed by his old enemy, the Spirit King. His successor, Michael Holt, was created in 1997’s Spectre #54 by John Ostrander and Tom Mandrake; Holt was a brilliant scientist who was almost driven to suicide by the death of his wife and unborn child in an accident, but was inspired to take up heroics when the ghostly Spectre related the tale of the original Mr. Terrific to him. The Holt version of Mr. Terrific, armed with high-tech weaponry and vehicles, appeared in Superman as part of the Justice Gang, alongside Green Lantern and Hawkgirl; he alone took Lois Lane’s concerns about Lex Luthor seriously, and helped her rescue Superman from Luthor’s interdimensional prison. He’s also set to return in next year’s Superman follow-up, Man of Tomorrow.

Terrific isn’t the only member of the Superman ensemble who’s set to hit the small screen. Intrepic Daily Planet reporter Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo) will headline DC Crime, a new comedy series that will pair him with DC’s deadliest villains; the first season will reportedly feature Gorilla Grodd.

Mr. Terrific is in active development; no release date has yet been announced. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
