VPN firm Surfshark has just announced a 40% expansion of its global VPN server network, bringing its total count to an impressive 4,500.
This move enhances Surfshark‘s global coverage and provides users with more connection options, which can help reduce server load and improve speeds.
However, the company is using this moment to challenge a long-held industry metric: that a higher server count is always better.
For years, VPN providers have used the size of their server network as a key selling point. While a large number of servers can be beneficial, Surfshark argues that customers should look beyond the numbers.
The company stressed that the true measure of a top-tier service lies in the quality, consistency, and performance of its infrastructure, not just its size.
This expansion demonstrates Surfshark’s commitment to providing one of the best VPN services on the market, ensuring it has the capacity to serve a growing user base.
At the same time, its focus on quality sends a clear message that reliability and user experience are its top priorities, a sentiment that echoes a similar argument recently made by its rival, NordVPN.
Quality over quantity
Diving deeper into the “quality over quantity” debate, Surfshark explained that while broad global coverage is essential, it’s the user experience that truly defines a VPN’s worth.
A VPN server is the crucial piece of hardware that encrypts a user’s internet traffic and masks their IP address, but its effectiveness depends on how well it’s maintained and optimized.
“Server count is an easy and understandable metric for comparing VPN providers, but it doesn’t capture the full picture,” said Justas Pukys, Senior Product Manager at Surfshark.
“A strong VPN delivers not just broad reach but reliable, high-performance servers, minimized latency, and uninterrupted connections across its network. In practice, this means robust uptime, proactive maintenance, and a smooth, user-friendly experience for all online activities,” Pukys added.
