Now that Sydney Sweeney’s most divisive TV show is officially over, viewers can breathe a sigh of relief and newcomers can be assured that, for all its flaws, the HBO show is worth a binge. It is ironic that A-list actor Sydney Sweeney’s favorite show is Law & Order: SVU, a procedural that has reliably cranked out dozens of episodes a year for over two decades at this stage. While Law & Order: SVU is one of the most consistent and arguably formulaic shows on TV, Sweeney’s career has been defined by staggering highs and brutal lows.
Sweeney’s small-screen career started strong, as the actor parlayed a supporting role in the iconic HBO murder mystery Sharp Objects into a starring role in Netflix’s acclaimed teen drama Everything Sucks. However, that series was axed after only one season, and soon Sweeney’s big-screen career began to be defined by similarly dramatic inconsistency. 2024 brought Sweeney a massive blockbuster success in Anyone But You and a solid indie hit in the horror movie Immaculate, but the same year saw the star appear in the critically drubbed Madame Web and the financial flop Eden.
While Sweeney’s 2025 psychological thriller The Housemaid was a $401 million success, her boxing biopic Christy was a massive financial failure and a critical flop. While that outing by Animal Kingdom’s David Michôd was arguably underrated, the most intriguing and illustrative example of Sweeney’s mixed screen career comes in the form of her most famous small-screen series. Creator Sam Levinson’s starry teen drama cum crime epic Euphoria lasted three seasons between 2019 and 2026, and ran the gamut in terms of critical and fan responses in that time.
Euphoria’s Ending Proves The Teen Drama Turned Crime Thriller Is Worth Binging
Euphoria began life as a teen drama set in a California high school. Although critics lauded its first season for its supposedly bracing realism, the series was always a heightened, hyper-dramatic look at the worst excesses of contemporary young adult culture. Euphoria’s lead characters included Zendaya’s sympathetic recovering opioid addict Rue, Jacob Elordi’s abusive jock Nate, and Sweeney’s clueless and self-absorbed Cassie.
These figures were endlessly fascinating, not despite, but rather because of, their toxic traits. While Euphoria aimed to be more grounded than the likes of The CW’s absurd teen murder mystery Riverdale, the show’s attempts at realism were always sacrificed in favor of grandeur and shock value.
Season 1 featured jaw-dropping amounts of explicit nudity and unconventional sex, while season 2 upped the ante with heavier onscreen drug use and a storyline that cleaved closer and closer to the world of crime drama thanks to Angus Cloud’s unexpectedly sweet drug dealer Fez. Cloud’s untimely death reshaped season 3’s story, but the show only delved deeper into the criminal underworld in this outing.
Euphoria’s Flaws Were What Made The Series Must-Watch TV
The news that Euphoria season 3’s ending will act as the series finale means that the show is officially over, and new viewers can now binge the series from start to finish. Admittedly, it is impossible to ignore Euphoria‘s absurdly cartoony excesses and abandoned plot lines entirely.
However, this doesn’t mean that Sweeney’s breakout hit isn’t well worth a watch for viewers who know what to expect. Although Euphoria initially bills itself as a worthy, self-serious look at modern teenage life, this isn’t really what viewers should expect from the series.
In the end, Euphoria was a wild, often absurd, always surprising, and genuinely unpredictable show that blended black comedy, bizarre character drama, and violent crime thrills to create something utterly unique. While not always consistent, the HBO hit was never boring, and Euphoria’s stellar cast ensures the show is still worth a watch despite its messy storytelling.
