Dutton Ranch confirms Taylor Sheridan’s surprising replacement for Kevin Costner’s John Dutton in Paramount+’s Yellowstone spinoff. Premiering with two episodes on May 15th, Dutton Ranch reunites Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser as Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler as they forge a new life for themselves in South Texas.
In Dutton Ranch, Beth and Rip are free and hundreds of miles removed from the burden of protecting the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. Defending his family’s legacy was John Dutton’s sole purpose when he was alive, with Beth and Rip subservient to her father. Yellowstone‘s series finale ended with Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) selling his family’s land back to the Broken Rock Reservation.
Beth and Rip stake their claim in Rio Paloma, Texas, but Dutton Ranch proves that trouble finds them wherever they go. The Dutton-Wheelers, and their adopted teenager, Carter (Finn Little), encounter new adversaries in South Texas despite their desire for peace. In turn, Dutton Ranch introduces the spinoff’s twist on Kevin Costner’s John Dutton.
Annette Bening’s Beulah Jackson Is Dutton Ranch’s Replacement For Kevin Costner & John Dutton
Taylor Sheridan’s undefeated streak of casting A-list actors continues in Dutton Ranch. This includes Academy Award nominee Annette Bening as Beulah Jackson, who embodies Dutton Ranch‘s surprising replacement for Kevin Costner’s John Dutton.
Taylor Sheridan’s New 9-Part Neo-Western Spinoff Flips Yellowstone On Its Head
Dutton Ranch is Yellowstone’s highly anticipated sequel/spinoff, but Beth and Rip’s move to South Texas makes them the invaders of another ranch.
As seen in Dutton Ranch‘s trailer, Beulah owns the largest and most powerful ranch in Rio Paloma. It’s immediately clear that Beulah will do anything it takes to protect her family’s legacy, just as John Dutton did on Yellowstone. Dutton Ranch’s clever twist is putting Beth and Rip against a female version of JohnDutton, who becomes their enemy.
Beulah tells Beth Dutton that her ranch has existed for 190 years. This means Jackson’s claim on Rio Paloma precedes the Duttons’ 140-year history in Montana by a half-century.
The Jackson family has surely done similarly unspeakable acts to protect their ranch as the Duttons did to defend the Yellowstone. Time will tell if Beulah has the same love for her family and scruples that John Dutton had.
Ingeniously, Dutton Ranch spins Beth and Rip as the outsiders and invaders, placing them in the position of so many of the adversaries who had designs on the Yellowstone that the Duttons fought and killed.
Kevin Costner’s Spirit Is In Dutton Ranch
Dutton Ranch doesn’t shy away from the memory of John Dutton, nor should it. Rip reminds Beth in Dutton Ranch‘s trailer that they “brought the best part” of John with them to South Texas.
Along with some trinkets and paraphernalia that used to belong to the late Dutton patriarch, Rip must be referring to John’s fighting spirit, which Beth inherited, as well as the countless lessons Rip learned from his surrogate father figure.
Given how much time has passed, Kevin Costner’s contentious exit from Yellowstone in 2024 may be water under the bridge. Perhaps Costner would be willing to cameo as John Dutton in Dutton Ranch flashbacks. There is also the chance that archival footage of Kevin as John could be used in Dutton Ranch.
Another possibility is Josh Lucas returning to play the younger John Dutton in Dutton Ranch flashbacks. Dutton Ranch could continue Yellowstone’s penchant for showing Rip and Beth in their teenage years, perhaps to juxtapose against Carter and his new love interest, Oreana (Natalie Alyn Lind).
The memories of Kevin Costner and John Dutton are an inextricable part of Beth and Rip.
No matter what, the memories of Kevin Costner and John Dutton are an inextricable part of Beth and Rip. Still, Dutton Ranch will pit Yellowstone‘s most popular couple against Texas’ version of John Dutton.
Beth and Rip know how to fight someone like her father, but there’s no telling how formidable and dangerous Beulah Jackson will prove to be in Dutton Ranch.
