The update we’ve all wanted to hear about the 28 Years Later series and its next installment has officially been revealed, painting a promising picture of the road forward for the franchise. Following up on the ever-iconic 28 Days Later was always set to be a challenge for the 28 Years Later series – especially after 28 Weeks Later‘s more divided reception – but the 2025 28 Years Later truly stuck the landing, providing a stellar revival for the franchise.
While 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple garnered similarly solid reviews, its fiscal results paled in comparison to 28 Years Later itself, causing concerns about how and whether the franchise would continue forwards from fans, given lower box office results have spelled the end of more than one beloved movie series in times before now.
Thankfully, based on the newest updates about the third 28 Years Later movie, that doesn’t appear to be the case – and indeed, any delays in the production process for the film appear to have happened for good reason, and could well help ensure that the final result for the next film is even stronger by giving those involved longer to work on specific parts of the creative process.
28 Years Later 3’s Newest Update Confirms The Movie Is Still Moving Forward
28 Years Later director and producer Danny Boyle revealed recently in an interview with JoBlo that the original intention had been to film the next chapter in the franchise in 2026, but that the crew had “ran out of time” because the area they intended to film is “set in an area of Britain [where] you can only film at certain times of the year. We ran out of time this year – we literally ran out of time… So it’ll be, hopefully, fingers crossed, next year.“
Given this interview also saw Boyle mention that “there’s the enthusiasm there, and Alex [Garland] has done a wonderful script for it“, the fate of the next movie in the 28 Years Later lineup seems all the more promising, helping combat concerns that the franchise may have come to a standstill, especially following the lower box office results for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.
With a more concrete idea of when the next 28 Years Later movie will be filming – and thus what its production timeline may subsequently look like – it’s now easier to see what the future of the franchise will be like than ever, and easier to get even more excited for this follow-up installment based on the promise of a “wonderful script” from a series that has already provided some truly strong plotlines and scenes.
Horror’s 2026 Movie Results Prove 28 Years Later 3 Still Needs To Happen
While 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple didn’t fare too strongly at the box office in the first month of the year, the later span of 2026 thus far has shown that there’s plenty of room for the kind of story-rich and character-driven horror story that 28 Years Later has sought to show throughout the course of its run – suggesting a key issue with The Bone Temple was indeed audience confusion around how the film fit into the wider franchise, since some reportedly believed it to be a re-release of 28 Years Later itself.
With films like Iron Lung, Obsession, and most recently Backrooms netting themselves considerable box office results alongside their critical acclaim, it’s easy to see how audiences have been primed to keep an eye on the horror space right now, and how this could lead to increased interest and hopes for the likes of the 28 Years Later series going forward.
