It wasn’t long ago that it felt as if any new horror release was doomed to fail at the box office. However, in recent years, the genre has had a renaissance, headlined by several horror films that have managed to even earn Academy recognition. Earlier this year, the most successful horror film of the century debuted and took the world by surprise. Focus Features’ Obsession, Curry Barker‘s breakout masterpiece about one man’s foolish wish for his friend to love him more than anything in the world, rose beyond all expectations and to eye-watering box office heights.
A hopeful to score Academy Awards nominations next year, including a nod for star Inde Navarrette, who is still going viral for her career-defining performance, it was at the box office where Obsession truly shone. By the end of its run — which is still technically ongoing — Obsessionhas become the highest-grossing non-animated original film of the past decade, the first film with a sub-million production budget to earn over $200 million this century, and even the highest-grossing original horror movie of this century.
Another horror film to benefit from the genre’s 2020s renaissance is 2025’s Final Destination Bloodlines, which became the best-reviewed and highest-grossing movie in a franchise that so often underwhelmed. Directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein, and starring Kaitlyn Santa Juana, the film was the sixth in the franchise to date, and earned just shy of $320 million worldwide, against a reported budget of just $50 million. A year on, and the film is still proving popular, officially ranking as one of the ten most-streamed movies on Netflix in the world, at the time of writing.

Will There Be More ‘Final Destination’ Movies?
Following the box office success of Final Destination Bloodlines, New Line Cinema made the unsurprising decision to greenlight a seventh film in the franchise. Franchise producer Craig Perry and writer Lori Evans Taylor are both returning, with Sheila Hannah Taylor, Jon Watts, Dianne McGunigle, and Toby Emmerich all returning as executive producers. The movie is currently slated for a May 12, 2028, release, and plot details are being kept tightly under wraps.
