Best known for her role as Rue in The Hunger Games, the last few years have been huge for Amandla Stenberg, who starred in one of the most popular Star Wars Disney Plus shows ever made, The Acolyte. Despite mostly positive reception from critics and strong viewership numbers, the show was canceled after only one season, and its future season plans have since been abandoned. The stars of the show have gone on to land big roles in other projects, though — The Stranger/Qimir actor Manny Jacinto has been tapped to star in the third season of Fallout, which is now in production at Prime Video. As for Stenberg, she’ll headline one of the biggest fantasy movies of 2027, but the new release has not been without its controversy.
Stenberg will star as Amari in Children of Blood and Bone, the fantasy adaptation of the beloved novel written by Tomi Adeyemi, who has distanced herself from the film, even admitting that she won’t be watching it when it hits theaters on January 15, 2027. Adeyemi even took to her personal Instagram to post a video of her blocking Stenberg on social media, doubling down on her stance of being unhappy with the adaptation. After Paramount dropped the first batch of images from Children of Blood and Bone a few weeks ago, the studio released the first official trailer for the film, confirming that it plans to stick to its January 2025 opening. Additional cast members for the film include Cynthia Erivo, Lashana Lynch, Zackary Momoh, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Chiwetel Ejiofor as King Saran, Regina King as Queen Nehanda, Idris Elba and Viola Davis. Saniyya Sidney, Diaana Babnicova, Bukky Bakray, Ayra Starr, Shamz Garuba, Kola Bodunde, Pamilerin Afolake Ayodeji, Tèmítópé Fágbénlé also star.

What Is ‘Children of Blood and Bone’ About?
Paramount’s official synopsis for Children of Blood and Bone reads as follows: “In the epic fantasy world of Orïsha, a young woman goes on a quest to reclaim the magic that was violently stolen from her people. She and her brother ally with the daughter and son of the king to fight back against his brutal rule.” Gina Prince-Bythewood adapted the screenplay for Children of Blood and Bone and she also directed the film. This will be her first directorial feature in five years — she last directed Viola Davis in The Woman King in 2022.
