Summer begins May 1 with 20th Century Studios’ The Devil Wears Prada 2, which after arriving on three-week tracking Thursday morning is eyeing a $66 million+ opening.
Presales we hear are double that of Wuthering Heights (which had a four-and-half-week advance ticket sales window). Devil Wears Prada 2‘s tickets went on sale March 12. Those presales figures make sense given the opening forecast we’re seeing.
As expected, the movie is strongest with women, young and old. But male definite interest is in good shape we understand relative to Barbie, The Little Mermaid and It Ends With Us. First choice is particularly excellent with women over 25, which is just behind Wicked‘s and well ahead of It Ends With Us. The latter was a late-breaking campaign; ticket sales by that pic’s first Monday indicated it was headed to a start north of $50M).
Prada 2 will also benefit from playing into Mother’s Day weekend in its second frame, and will continue to serve as strong counterprogramming against a pair of summer dude movies, Mortal Kombat II from New Line and Lucasfilm/Disney’s Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu.
