The iPhone Fold – sometimes known as the foldable iPhone – could be a phone of multiple firsts for Apple, because not only would it be the company’s first foldable phone, but it might also be the first iPhone with an all-screen design.
By ‘all-screen design’, we mean a phone with no camera cut-out or notch on the screen. This is something a recent JPMorgan analyst report (seen by 9to5Mac) suggests is a possibility for the iPhone Fold, as it states that the in-development phone will have an under-display 24MP camera.
That would mean the selfie camera on at least one of the screens would be hidden under the display, as we’ve seen on a handful of Android phones.
Of course, current iPhones also have Face ID components in the display, so hiding just the camera wouldn’t be enough for an all-screen design. But the foldable iPhone is rumored to use Touch ID rather than Face ID, in which case Apple would just need to hide the camera.
It’s unclear whether just one or both screens would have an under-display selfie camera, but 9to5Mac predicts that it’s likely Apple would use the same camera for both displays. Even if this is only used for one, though, that could mean at least one screen would be free of cut-outs and notches.
A major upgrade
That’s a big deal, as iPhones have long had more interruptions in their displays than the best Android phones, so an all-screen design could be almost as big a selling point as the foldable nature of the phone.
As ever, though, we’d take this report with a pinch of salt, especially as the iPhone Fold probably won’t launch for another year – so even if this is Apple’s plan now, it could still change.
In any case, you won’t have to wait that long for a new iPhone, as the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max are all expected to land in less than a week, on September 9.
