Since it first launched on the PlayStation 3 back in 2013, The Last of Us has swiftly become a cultural phenomenon, going onto welcome an equally successful sequel, The Last of Us Part II, way too many remasters, a live-action HBO series, books, board games, and everything in between. You name it, it has been made.
Created, written, and co-directed by Neil Druckmann, The Last of Us takes us to a post-apocalyptic America where we follow the story of a smuggler who is tasked with transporting a young girl across multiple states in an attempt to discover why she is immune from an infection that has turned humanity into zombie-like creatures.
What Does The Last Of Us Part 3 Have In Store?
Now, despite multiple projects under its belt, it is hard not to notice that we have yet to receive an official confirmation of a potential The Last of Us Part III. At the time of writing, The Last of Us Part III is not in development, and there are no signs that it will be in the future, once Naughty Dog has completed its current project, the brand-new IP, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
However, with Druckmann himself giving mixed messages over the years, it is no surprise that some fans are still holding out hope. On one occasion, the Naughty Dog head has said that “this could be it” in terms of TLOU and TLOU Part II being the only entries. However, on a separate occasion during the Grounded documentary, he said the complete opposite, claiming that “it does feel like there is probably one more chapter to the story.”
This was back in 2024, and since then, Druckmann has decided to keep radio silent about the future of the franchise. Well, that was until earlier this year.
Have We Seen The Last Of Ellie And Abby?
Back in March, Druckmann took to Instagram to drop a subtle hint about the future of the franchise, and a potential The Last of Us Part III. The post was dedicated to sharing an early sketch of our Joel and Ellie, with the creator writing, “Cleaning out the garage today and stumbled on my original sketches from 2003 for a game pitch about a man, his surrogate daughter, and a trek across a broken America.”
He continued, “Been a wild journey. Grateful for every part of it, especially the few stops that remain on the road ahead.”
As you can see, the words “the few stops that remain on the road ahead” stick out like a sore thumb. Of course, Druckmann is not confirming anything here, but could the “few stops” be referring to a potential third part in the franchise?
For now, all we can do is wait and see as Druckmann, and the rest of Naughty Dog, are prioritizing Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. However, if the creator has a story to tell, he will no doubt tell it, and hopefully, this will be in the form of The Last of Us Part III.
